Notes: 1. machtah (fire-holder/censer) is the word used here, NOT miqteret (H4730). The DOA censer is machtah (H4289). 2. gachalei-esh (coals of fire) — gechel (H1513) in construct with esh (fire). 3. me'al hamizbeach millifnei YHWH — "from upon the altar from before YHWH" — the altar is the brazen altar in the court. 4. qetoret sammim daqqah — "incense of spices, beaten fine" — the sacred blend of Exo 30:34-38. 5. wehevi (Hiphil of bo') — "and he shall BRING" — causative: bring it in, carry it within. 6. mibbeit lapparoket — "within the veil" — literally "from the house of the curtain" = past/within the veil.

וְלֹ֥א ו + לא Conj + Neg and not
יָמֽוּת מות Verb.Qal.Impf.3ms he shall die

Critical Notes: 1. kissah (Piel of kasah) = COVER intensively. The incense cloud COVERS the kapporet. This is the Piel stem = intensive/thoroughgoing covering. 2. anan haqqetoret = "cloud of the incense" — the incense produces a CLOUD that serves as a barrier between the priest and the raw divine presence. 3. et-hakkapporet = the mercy seat/atonement cover (from kaphar, to atone/cover). 4. welo yamut = "and he shall not die" — purpose clause. The cloud is necessary for the priest's survival in the divine presence. 5. The sequence: put incense upon fire -> cloud covers mercy seat -> he does not die. The incense mediates between priest and God.

הֵחֵ֥ל חלל Verb.Hiphil.Perf.3ms has begun
הַנָּֽגֶף נגף Noun.ms + Art the plague

Critical Notes: 1. FIVE imperatives in rapid succession: qach (take!), ten (put!), sim (put!), holek (go!), kapper (atone!) — urgency is extreme. 2. mehérah = "with haste/quickly" — reinforces the urgency. 3. Same ritual elements as Lev 16:12: machtah (censer) + esh (fire) + me'al hammizbeach (from the altar) + qetoret (incense). 4. kapper (Piel of kaphar) = "make atonement" — same word used for DOA atonement. 5. yatsa haqqetsef millifnei YHWH = "the wrath has gone out from before YHWH" — wrath originates from God's presence. 6. hechel hannagef = "the plague has begun" — the plague is ALREADY active when Aaron is dispatched.

Notes: wayyarots = "and he RAN" — narrative urgency. Aaron physically runs into the midst of a dying congregation.

וַתֵּעָצַ֖ר ו + עצר Conj + Verb.Niphal.Wayq.3fs and was restrained/stopped
הַמַּגֵּפָֽה מגפה Noun.fs + Art the plague

Critical Notes: 1. wayyaamad bein hammetim ubein hachayyim = "and he stood between the dead and the living" — one of the most powerful images in the OT. Aaron as mediator-intercessor literally standing as a boundary between death and life. 2. watte'atsar (Niphal of 'atsar) = "was restrained/held back" — the plague was STOPPED, RESTRAINED. Niphal = passive voice: the plague was acted upon, not merely ceased. 3. hammagephah = "the plague" — from nagaph (to strike/smite). Same root as hannagef in v.11-12.

כָּל כל Noun.ms.Cst all
הָאָֽרֶץ ארץ Noun.s + Art the earth

Notes: has (Piel imperative of hasah, H2013) = "Be still!/Hush!" — a command to universal silence. The Piel stem intensifies: not merely "be quiet" but "BE HUSHED." The entire earth is commanded to silence BEFORE God's presence in his holy temple.

Zephaniah 1:7

הַ֕ס מִפְּנֵ֖י אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה כִּ֤י קָרֹוב֙ יֹ֣ום יְהוָ֔ה כִּֽי־הֵכִ֧ין יְהוָ֛ה זֶ֖בַח הִקְדִּ֥ישׁ קְרֻאָֽיו׃

הִקְדִּ֥ישׁ קדשׁ Verb.Hiphil.Perf.3ms has sanctified/consecrated
קְרֻאָֽיו קרא + 3ms Verb.Qal.Ptcp.mp + suffix his called ones/guests

Notes: Same has (H2013) as Hab 2:20. Here the reason for silence is explicit: ki qarov yom YHWH = "for the day of YHWH is near." Silence precedes the Day of the Lord. The sacrificial language (zebah = sacrifice; hiqdish qeru'av = "he has consecrated his invited ones") adds a DOA/judgment dimension.
