Paul's Moral Teaching (Anti-Antinomian Passages)¶
Romans 6:1-2, 14-15¶
"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?" "For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid."
Galatians 5:13-14, 19-21, 24¶
"For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." "For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." "And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts."
Ephesians 5:3-7¶
"But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;" "Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks." "For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience." "Be not ye therefore partakers with them."
Colossians 3:5-8¶
"Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:" "For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:" "But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth."
1 Thessalonians 4:1-7¶
"Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more." "For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus." "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:" "Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:" "For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness."
Romans 13:8-14¶
"Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law." "For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." "Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." "Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying." "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (immediate context of "all things lawful")¶

"And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."

Additional Context Passages¶
Paul's vice list parallels to Jesus's ethical teaching¶
Galatians 5:19-21 compared to Matthew 5:21-28: - Jesus: anger = murder (Mat 5:22) | Paul: "hatred, variance, wrath, murders" (Gal 5:20-21) - Jesus: lust = adultery (Mat 5:28) | Paul: "Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness" (Gal 5:19) - Jesus: "Be ye perfect" (Mat 5:48) | Paul: "they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom" (Gal 5:21)
Concept Context Results (concept_context.py --scope author)¶
- 1 Cor 6:9 (author scope): Paul uses KINGDOM + INHERITANCE concepts also in Eph 5:5 ("no whoremonger... hath any inheritance in the kingdom") and Gal 5:21 ("shall not inherit the kingdom of God") — Paul's moral exclusion lists parallel each other.
- Gal 5:19 (author scope): Paul's FLESH concept appears in 1 Cor 6:16 (joined to harlot = one flesh), connecting the "all things lawful" context to the flesh/Spirit framework.
- Rom 6:1 (author scope): Paul's SIN + GRACE concepts appear throughout Rom 5-6, establishing that grace never permits sin.
