Mark 10:2-9 (Parallel)

Mark 10:6-9 — "But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. Paul's Teaching on Marriage and Celibacy

1 Corinthians 7:1-40 (Full chapter — the primary text)

1 Corinthians 7:1 — "Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman."

1 Corinthians 7:2 — "Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband."

1 Corinthians 7:3-4 — "Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband. The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife."

1 Corinthians 7:5 — "Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency."

1 Corinthians 7:6 — "But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment."

1 Corinthians 7:7 — "For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that."

1 Corinthians 7:8-9 — "I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn."

1 Corinthians 7:10-11 — "And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife."

1 Corinthians 7:12-13 — "But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him."

1 Corinthians 7:14 — "For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy."

1 Corinthians 7:15 — "But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace."

1 Corinthians 7:17 — "But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches."

1 Corinthians 7:25-26 — "Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful. I suppose therefore that this is good for the present distress, I say, that it is good for a man so to be."

1 Corinthians 7:27-28 — "Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife. But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you."

1 Corinthians 7:29 — "But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;"

1 Corinthians 7:32-34 — "But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband."

1 Corinthians 7:35 — "And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction."

1 Corinthians 7:36 — "But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry."

1 Corinthians 7:38 — "So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better."

1 Corinthians 7:39-40 — "The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God."

1 Corinthians 6:15-16 (Paul quotes Gen 2:24)

1 Corinthians 6:16 — "What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh."

1 Corinthians 9:5 (Apostolic right to a wife)

1 Corinthians 9:5 — "Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?"

Ephesians 5:28 — "So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself."

Ephesians 5:31-32 — "For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church."

Ephesians 5:33 — "Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband."

1 Corinthians 11:11-12 (Man and woman interdependent)

1 Corinthians 11:11-12 — "Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God."

Romans 7:2-3 (Marriage law analogy)

Romans 7:2-3 — "For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man."

1 Timothy 4:1-3 (Forbidding to marry = doctrine of devils)

1 Timothy 4:1-3 — "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth."

1 Timothy 5:14 (Younger women should marry)

1 Timothy 5:14 — "I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully."

1 Timothy 3:2 (Bishop husband of one wife)

1 Timothy 3:2 — "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;"

Hebrews 13:4 (Marriage honourable)

Hebrews 13:4 — "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge."

Concept Context Results

1 Corinthians 7:7 — concept: GRACE (charisma, G5486)

Paul uses charisma (gift) for celibacy in 7:7 — the same word family used throughout 1 Cor 12 for spiritual gifts. This frames celibacy not as a moral superiority but as a divine enablement given to some, not all.

Matthew 19:12 — concept: KINGDOM (basileia, G932)

Jesus's eunuch saying is framed in kingdom terms: "for the kingdom of heaven's sake." Same kingdom vocabulary as Mat 19:14, 19:23, 19:24.

Ephesians 5:31 — concept: FLESH (sarx, G4561)

Paul quotes Gen 2:24 ("one flesh") in marriage context. The sarx concept connects to 1 Cor 6:16 where Paul also cites the "one flesh" formula.

1 Timothy 4:3 — concepts: FAITH (pistis, G4103), TRUTH (aletheia, G225)

Paul frames "forbidding to marry" within departing from THE FAITH and THE TRUTH — doctrinal apostasy language.

Revelation 14:1-5 (for completeness)

Revelation 14:4 — "These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb."

Note: This is apocalyptic genre (John's vision, not Jesus's direct teaching or Paul's epistles). The "virgins" language is widely debated — literal celibacy vs. spiritual purity/faithfulness. Genre gate consideration applies.
