Bible Study: "Lost Sheep of Israel" vs "Apostle to the Gentiles" (pvj-15)

Question

Jesus said "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Matthew 15:24) and instructed his disciples "Go not into the way of the Gentiles" (Matthew 10:5). Paul was "the apostle of the Gentiles" (Romans 11:13) and preached "there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek" (Romans 10:12). Did Paul contradict Jesus's mission focus? Examine whether Jesus's restriction was temporal (during his earthly ministry) vs theological (permanent): Jesus also said "make disciples of ALL nations" (Matthew 28:19), "this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in ALL the world" (Matthew 24:14), "other sheep I have, which are not of this fold" (John 10:16), and "ye shall be witnesses unto me... unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8). Did Jesus himself expand the mission before Paul did?

Study Question Relevance
pvj-03-audience-differences Audience/situational differences between Jesus and Paul Directly relevant — already covers many of these same passages
pvj-01-paul-knows-jesus Does Paul know Jesus's teachings? Paul's knowledge of and deference to Jesus
nt-disciples-prejudice Were disciples racist/prejudiced? Gentile inclusion in early church

Key findings from pvj-03: Already classified 17 E-items and 6 inferences on this topic. Found that Jesus's audience restriction was temporal (N003, resolved Strong via I-B SIS). Peter initiated Gentile inclusion. Jerusalem apostles endorsed Paul. All E-items classified Neutral. Harmony inferences are I-A; Contradiction inferences are I-B (both resolved against contradiction).

Focus Areas

  1. New ground beyond pvj-03: pvj-03 established the temporal nature of the restriction. pvj-15 must go deeper into:
  2. Jesus's OWN interactions with Gentiles during his "Israel-only" ministry (centurion, Syrophoenician woman, Samaritan woman, Greeks in John 12)
  3. OT prophetic background that both Jesus and Paul drew from
  4. Paul's specific claim of being "apostle of the Gentiles" and what that means
  5. Romans 11:13-32 — Paul's "olive tree" theology of Jew-Gentile relations
  6. Whether Paul's "no difference" language (Rom 10:12; Gal 3:28) goes beyond what Jesus taught
  7. concept_context.py --scope author on key verses from BOTH Paul and the Gospels (mandatory per methodology)
  8. Cross-testament parallels to trace OT roots of the Gentile mission
