A. Paul on "Works of the Law" (erga nomou)

Romans 3:20 — "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin."

Romans 3:27 — "Where [is] boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith."

Romans 3:28 — "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."

Romans 3:31 — "Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law."

Romans 9:32 — "Wherefore? Because [they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;"

Galatians 2:16 — "Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."

B. Paul on Faith and Justification

Romans 4:1 — "What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?"

Romans 4:2 — "For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath [whereof] to glory; but not before God."

Romans 4:3 — "For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness."

Romans 4:4 — "Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt."

Romans 4:5 — "But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness."

Romans 4:6 — "Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,"

C. Paul on Obedience (Positive Works)

Romans 2:13 — "(For not the hearers of the law [are] just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified."

Romans 6:1-2 — "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"

Romans 6:15 — "What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid."

Galatians 5:6 — "For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love."

Galatians 5:19 — "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,"

D. Jesus on Doing the Will of the Father

Matthew 7:21 — "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."

Matthew 7:22 — "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?"

Matthew 7:23 — "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."

Matthew 7:24 — "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:"

Matthew 7:25 — "And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock."

Matthew 7:26 — "And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:"

E. Jesus on Judgment by Deeds

Matthew 25:31-32 — "When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth [his] sheep from the goats:"

Matthew 25:34-36 — "Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me."

Matthew 25:40 — "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done [it] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done [it] unto me."

Luke 6:46 — "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?"

Luke 6:47 — "Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:"

Luke 6:48 — "He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock."

Luke 6:49 — "But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."


G. Jesus on Faith

Matthew 8:10 — "When Jesus heard [it], he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel."

Matthew 9:22 — "But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour."

Matthew 9:29 — "Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you."

Matthew 17:20 — "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."

Mark 11:22 — "And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God."

Mark 11:23 — "For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith."

Mark 11:24 — "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive [them], and ye shall have [them]."

Luke 7:50 — "And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace."

Luke 17:5 — "And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith."

Luke 17:6 — "And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you."

H. John 6:28-29 — The Work of God = Believing

John 6:28 — "Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?"

John 6:29 — "Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."


I. James on Faith and Works

James 2:14 — "What [doth it] profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?"

James 2:17 — "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."

James 2:18 — "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works."

James 2:19 — "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble."

James 2:20 — "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?"

James 2:21 — "Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?"
