pvj-01: Does Paul Know Jesus's Teachings?¶
Study Question¶
Does Paul know Jesus's teachings? How often does Paul quote or allude to Jesus directly? Examine 1 Corinthians 7:10 ("not I but the Lord"), 1 Corinthians 9:14 (laborer worthy of his hire), 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (Last Supper institution), 1 Thessalonians 4:15 ("by the word of the Lord"), Acts 20:35 ("more blessed to give than to receive"), Romans 14:14 (paralleling Mark 7:15). Does Paul claim independence from the apostolic tradition (Galatians 1:11-12 "not received of man") or dependence on it (1 Corinthians 15:3 "I delivered unto you that which I also received")? Can both be true? How does Paul relate to the Jesus tradition — and does the answer affect whether disagreements constitute "contradictions"?

Focus Areas¶
Based on tool discoveries, the analysis should focus on:
Focus 1: The Received/Delivered Vocabulary (paradidomi / paralambano)¶
Paul uses technical Jewish transmission vocabulary (G3860 paradidomi / G3880 paralambano) in 1 Co 11:23 and 1 Co 15:3. These are the same terms used in rabbinic tradition for formal handing down of teaching. Examine whether this vocabulary indicates Paul received pre-existing tradition about Jesus's words and deeds.
Focus 2: Paul's Direct Citations of Jesus¶
Catalogue every instance where Paul explicitly attributes a teaching to Jesus/the Lord: - 1 Co 7:10 — "not I, but the Lord" (marriage/divorce) - 1 Co 9:14 — "the Lord ordained" (worker's wages) - 1 Co 11:23-26 — "I received of the Lord" (Last Supper) - 1 Th 4:15 — "by the word of the Lord" (resurrection order) - Acts 20:35 — quoting Jesus: "It is more blessed to give than to receive"
Focus 3: Paul's Independence Claim (Galatians 1:11-12)¶
Paul says his gospel came "not of man" but "by the revelation of Jesus Christ." Examine what exactly Paul claims was revealed — the entire gospel content, or his apostolic commission and the meaning of what he received? Does Galatians 1:11-12 contradict 1 Corinthians 15:3, or do they address different aspects?
Focus 4: Romans 14:14 and Mark 7:15 Parallel¶
Paul says "nothing is unclean (koinos) of itself" — examine whether this parallels Jesus's "nothing from without can defile" (Mark 7:15). Note: the existing study biblical-diet-romans14-timothy may have relevant findings on Romans 14:14.
Focus 5: The "Both True" Question¶
Can Paul simultaneously claim (a) his gospel came by revelation (Gal 1:12) and (b) he received and delivered tradition (1 Co 15:3)? The Nave's TRADITION topic shows Paul himself uses tradition language positively (1 Co 11:2; 2 Th 2:15). Examine whether "independence" and "dependence" address different aspects of Paul's relationship to the Jesus tradition.
Focus 6: Implications for the "Contradiction" Question¶
If Paul knows and defers to Jesus's teachings, does this affect how we evaluate alleged contradictions between them? If Paul can distinguish "I say, not the Lord" (1 Co 7:12) from "not I but the Lord" (1 Co 7:10), does this indicate he is conscious of his relationship to Jesus's teaching and does not intend to contradict it?
Methodology¶
INVESTIGATIVE METHODOLOGY: - You are an investigator, not an advocate. Your job is to report what the evidence says. - Gather evidence from ALL sides. If a passage is cited by those who claim contradiction, examine it honestly. If a passage is cited by those who claim harmony, examine it honestly. - Do NOT assume your conclusion before examining the evidence. - Do NOT state opinions. State what the text says. Do not use editorial characterizations like "genuine tension," "strongest argument," "most significant challenge," "honestly acknowledge," or "non-intuitive reading." Simply state what each passage says and what each side infers from it. - When presenting findings, state: "The text says X" (explicit). Then state: "From this, the Contradiction interpretation infers Y" and "the Harmony interpretation infers Z" (inferred). - Never use language like "irrefutable," "obviously," or "clearly proves." Use "the text states," "this is consistent with." - The conclusion should emerge FROM the evidence, not be imposed ON it. - Present BOTH the Contradiction and Harmony positions at their strongest. Do not strawman either side.
