Verses¶
Primary Verses¶
Criterion 1 -- Creation Origin (Sabbath before sin)¶
Genesis 1:14 (moadim context)¶
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons [moadim, H4150], and for days, and years:
Genesis 2:1-3 (Three divine actions at creation)¶
2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested [shabath, H7673] on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 2:3 And God blessed [barakh] the seventh day, and sanctified [qadash] it: because that in it he had rested [shabath] from all his work which God created and made.
Context (Genesis 2:4-7):
2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, 2:5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Exodus 20:8-11 (Fourth Commandment -- creation grounding)¶
20:8 Remember [zakar, H2142] the sabbath [shabbath, H7676] day, to keep it holy [qadash]. 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
Exodus 16:4-5, 22-30 (Pre-Sinai Sabbath test)¶
16:4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. 16:5 And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily. 16:22 And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 16:23 And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath [shabbath, H7676] unto the LORD... 16:25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field. 16:26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none. 16:28 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? 16:29 See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. 16:30 So the people rested on the seventh day.
Criterion 2 -- Decalogue Membership¶
Exodus 20:1 (God spoke)¶
And God spake all these words, saying,
Deuteronomy 5:12-15 (Deuteronomy recapitulation)¶
5:12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee. 5:13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work: 5:14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
Deuteronomy 5:22 ("he added no more")¶
These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
Deuteronomy 4:13 ("his covenant, even ten commandments")¶
And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
Criterion 3 -- Delivery Mode Contrast¶
Exodus 31:18 ("written with the finger of God")¶
And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Exodus 32:16 ("the writing was the writing of God")¶
[Retrieved from Exodus 20:1 context -- the Decalogue section]

Leviticus 1:1 (ceremonial law through Moses)¶
And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
Deuteronomy 31:9, 24-26 (Moses wrote; book beside the ark)¶
31:9 And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel. 31:24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 31:25 That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, 31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
Galatians 3:19 (added because of transgressions)¶
Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Deuteronomy 4:13-14 (explicit distinction)¶
4:13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. 4:14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.
Criterion 4 -- Lev 23:37-38 Distinction¶
Leviticus 23:1-4 (weekly Sabbath stated first, then feast restart)¶
23:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 23:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. 23:4 These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
Leviticus 23:37-38 (THE DECISIVE SUMMARY -- millibad separation)¶
23:37 These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, every thing upon his day: 23:38 Beside [millibad, from min + l + bad, H905] the sabbaths [shabbetot] of the LORD, and beside your gifts, and beside all your vows, and beside all your freewill offerings, which ye give unto the LORD.
Leviticus 23:39 (feast sabbaths vs weekly)¶
Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath [shabbathown, H7677], and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath [shabbathown].
Numbers 28:9-10 (Sabbath offerings in own category)¶
28:9 And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering thereof: 28:10 This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering.
Colossians 2:14-17 (which sabbaths?)¶
2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days [sabbaton, G4521]: 2:17 Which are a shadow [skia, G4639] of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
OT Ceremonial Triad Pattern¶
2 Chronicles 31:3: He appointed also the king's portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, to wit, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths, and for the new moons, and for the set feasts, as it is written in the law of the LORD.
Ezekiel 45:17: And it shall be the prince's part to give burnt offerings, and meat offerings, and drink offerings, in the feasts, and in the new moons, and in the sabbaths, in all solemnities of the house of Israel...
Hosea 2:11: I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.
Criterion 5 -- Typological Function (Shadow vs. Memorial)¶
Exodus 20:8 (zakar -- memorial verb)¶
Remember [zakar, H2142, Qal Infinitive Absolute] the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Colossians 2:17 (skia -- shadow, forward-pointing)¶
Which are a shadow [skia, G4639] of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Hebrews 10:1 (shadow of good things to come)¶
For the law having a shadow [skia] of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
Hebrews 8:5 (earthly sanctuary as shadow)¶
Who serve unto the example and shadow [skia] of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle...
Exodus 31:16-17 (perpetual covenant, sign forever)¶
31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
Criterion 6 -- Hebrews 4:9 (sabbatismos)¶
Hebrews 4:1-11 (complete rest argument)¶
4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. 4:3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. 4:5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. 4:6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: 4:7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. 4:8 For if Jesus [Joshua] had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest [sabbatismos, G4520] to the people of God. 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
Criterion 7 -- Universal Scope ("made for man")¶
Mark 2:23-28 (Sabbath made for man)¶
2:23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made [egeneto, G1096, Aorist Middle Indicative] for man [anthropon, G444, generic humanity], and not man for the sabbath: 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Isaiah 56:1-8 (Foreigners/Gentiles and Sabbath -- FULL TEXT)¶
56:1 Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. 56:2 Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 56:3 Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people: neither let the eunuch say, Behold, I am a dry tree. 56:4 For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; 56:5 Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. 56:6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 56:7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. 56:8 The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
Isaiah 66:22-23 ("all flesh" on Sabbath)¶
66:22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. 66:23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
Exodus 20:10 (stranger within thy gates)¶
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Accountability Passages¶
Acts 17:30-31 (ignorance overlooked, now repent)¶
17:30 And the times of this ignorance [agnoia, G52] God winked at [hupereidon, G5237, Aorist Active Participle]; but now commandeth all men every where to repent [metanoein, G3340, Present Active Infinitive]: 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
James 4:17 (knowing good and not doing it)¶
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
John 9:41 (claiming to see increases accountability)¶

Luke 12:47-48 (proportional judgment based on knowledge)¶
12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 12:48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Hebrews 10:26 (willful sin after knowledge)¶
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
John 15:22 (if I had not come and spoken)¶
If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.
Romans 2:14-15 (Gentiles and the law written in hearts)¶
2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
1 Timothy 1:13 (mercy because of ignorance)¶
Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.
2 Peter 2:20-21 (better not to have known)¶
2:20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. 2:21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
Additional Supporting Passages¶
Exodus 31:13-17 (Sabbath as sign, perpetual covenant)¶
31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. 31:14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

Nehemiah 9:13-14 (Sinai retrospective -- Sabbath and direct speech)¶
9:13 Thou camest down also upon mount Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments: 9:14 And madest known unto them thy holy sabbath, and commandedst them precepts, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses thy servant:
Jeremiah 17:21-27 (Sabbath faithfulness = blessing; violation = destruction)¶
17:21 Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; 17:22 Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers. 17:24 And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein; 17:25 Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David...and this city shall remain for ever. 17:27 But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

Matthew 5:17-19 (not come to destroy the law)¶
5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Counterargument Passages¶
Galatians 4:9-10 (observing days)¶

He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
