Romans 3:1-31 (Full Chapter — Justification and Law)

Romans 3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit [is there] of circumcision? Romans 3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? Romans 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. Romans 3:5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? [Is] God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? Romans 4:1-25 (Full Chapter — Abraham's Faith and Law)

Romans 4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? Romans 4:2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath [whereof] to glory; but not before God. Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Romans 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Romans 5:1-21 (Full Chapter — Context for Law/Sin/Grace)

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 5:13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Romans 6:1-23 (Full Chapter — "Not Under Law But Under Grace")

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection: Romans 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Nomos in Rom 6: vv.14, 15 only (2 occurrences). "Not under the law" contrasted with "under grace." Key: Paul immediately asks "shall we sin?" (v.15) and answers "God forbid" — being "not under law" does NOT mean sin is permissible.

Romans 7:1-25 (Full Chapter — The Inner Man and the Law)

Romans 7:1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? Romans 7:2 For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to [her] husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of [her] husband. Romans 7:3 So then if, while [her] husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Romans 7:4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, [even] to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter. Romans 8:1-14 (Spirit, Law, and Righteousness)

Romans 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace. Key: v.4 — "the righteousness (dikaioma) of the law might be fulfilled in us" — the Spirit enables law-fulfillment, not law-abolition. Key: v.7 — "the carnal mind is...not subject to the law of God" — the law of God remains the standard; the problem is the carnal mind, not the law.

Romans 9:30-10:13 (Christ the Telos of the Law)

Romans 9:30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. Romans 9:31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. Romans 9:32 Wherefore? Because [they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; Romans 9:33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Romans 10:1 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. Romans 10:2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. Romans 10:3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Romans 10:4 For Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Romans 10:5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Romans 10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Romans 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Romans 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: Romans 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. Key: v.9 explicitly quotes 4 Decalogue commandments: adultery (7th), murder (6th), theft (8th), false witness (9th), covet (10th). Paul says "if there be any other commandment" — acknowledging more commandments exist. These are "briefly comprehended" in love.

Key: v.8 — "finding fault with THEM" (the people), not with the law. v.10 — "I will put MY laws into their mind" — possessive pronoun "my" indicates pre-existing law (per law-10 study).

1 Timothy 1:5-11 (Telos Parallel — Law Is Good)

Key: v.5 — "the end (telos, G5056) of the commandment is charity" — identical construction to Rom 10:4. Telos here clearly = goal/purpose, not termination. v.8 — "the law is good, if a man use it lawfully." vv.9-10 list moral sins corresponding to Decalogue commandments.

Galatians 2:14-21 (Justified by Faith, Not Works of Law)

Galatians 2:14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before [them] all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Galatians 3:19-25 (Law as Schoolmaster)

Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then [serveth] the law? Galatians 3:21 [Is] the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. Key: v.24 — law was schoolmaster "unto Christ" (eis Christon) — pointing TO Christ, not ending AT Christ.

Galatians 5:13-25 (Spirit vs Flesh — Law Fulfilled in Love)

Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, [even] in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Galatians 5:16 [This] I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Key: v.14 parallels Rom 13:8-10. v.18 — "led by the Spirit...not under the law" parallels Rom 6:14. v.23 — "against such there is no law" — Spirit-fruit does not violate the law.

2 Corinthians 3:1-18 (Ministry of Spirit vs Letter)

2 Corinthians 3:3 [Forasmuch as ye are] manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. 2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Corinthians 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written [and] engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which [glory] was to be done away: 2 Corinthians 3:9 For if the ministration of condemnation [be] glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord [is], there [is] liberty.

Key: v.7 — "ministration of death, written and engraven in stones" refers to the MINISTRY (diakonia) being done away, not the law itself. The glory of Moses' face (administration) is what faded, while the content (law) is written on hearts by the Spirit (v.3).

Deuteronomy 30:6-14 (Source of Paul's Quotation in Rom 10:6-8)

Deuteronomy 30:6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. Deuteronomy 30:11 For this commandment which I command thee this day, it [is] not hidden from thee, neither [is] it far off. Deuteronomy 30:12 It [is] not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Deuteronomy 30:13 Neither [is] it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Key: Paul quotes this passage in Rom 10:6-8 and says THIS is "the righteousness which is of faith" speaking. The LAW ITSELF teaches faith-righteousness (the word near, in mouth and heart).

Exodus 20:1-17 (The Ten Commandments — The Law Paul Identifies)

Exodus 20:1-2 And God spake all these words, saying, I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Exodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain... Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Key: Rom 7:7 quotes the 10th commandment ("thou shalt not covet"). Rom 13:9 quotes commandments 7, 6, 8, 9, 10. These are Decalogue commandments — Paul identifies nomos with the Ten Commandments.
