Bible Study: One Second Coming, Many Angles (hist-17)¶
Question¶
Do Revelation 1:7, 6:14-17, 14:14-20, and 19:11-21 describe the same event — the second coming of Christ? How do the winepress, cosmic signs, and universal visibility chains connect these passages? And is there biblical support for a separate "secret rapture" before the second coming?
Methodology¶
This study follows the investigative methodology defined in D:/bible/bible-studies/hist-series-methodology.md. Evidence items must be registered in the evidence database.
Source Restrictions: No denominational writings.
INVESTIGATIVE METHODOLOGY:
- You are an investigator, not an advocate. Your job is to report what the evidence says.
- Gather evidence from ALL sides. If a passage is cited by historicists, examine it honestly. If a passage is cited by preterists, futurists, or idealists, examine it honestly.
- Do NOT assume your conclusion before examining the evidence.
- Do NOT state opinions. State what the text says. Do not use editorial characterizations like "genuine tension," "strongest argument," "most significant challenge," "honestly acknowledge," or "non-intuitive reading." Simply state what each passage says and what each side infers from it.
- When presenting findings, state: "The text says X" (explicit). Then state: "From this, Y interpretation infers Z" and "W interpretation infers V" (inferred).
- Never use language like "irrefutable," "obviously," or "clearly proves." Use "the text states," "this is consistent with."
- The conclusion should emerge FROM the evidence, not be imposed ON it.

Key Findings from Related Studies:
From second-coming-revelation/CONCLUSION.md: - Revelation presents multiple descriptions of ONE pre-millennial second coming (Rev 1:7; 6:14-17; 11:15-18; 14:14-16; 16:15-21; 19:11-21), each with different emphasis - The wrath/winepress chain (Rev 14:10 → 14:19 → 14:20 → 19:15 → 6:16-17) proves chapters 6, 14, and 19 describe one event - The "all kindreds wail" chain (Rev 1:7 → 6:15-16) proves universal visibility = same event - OT source unity: Dan 7:13, Zech 12:10, Isa 63:1-3, Joel 3:13 all feed into these passages - "Thief" language (Rev 16:15; 2 Pet 3:10; 1 Thess 5:2) refers to timing, not visibility - Greek erchomai used consistently for all "coming" statements; no vocabulary-based distinction - Paul uses parousia, apokalypsis, and epiphaneia interchangeably (2 Thess 1:7-10; 2:1-8) - "Every eye shall see him" (Rev 1:7) eliminates any "secret" coming - Against secret rapture: no 7-year gap in Revelation's chronology; 2 Thess 2:1-8 places "gathering together" at same coming that destroys lawless one
From rev-6-14-vs-16-20-same-event/CONCLUSION.md: - Rev 6:14-17 and 16:17-21 both describe the second coming at different narrative positions - Greek vocabulary difference: kineō "moved" (6:14) vs pheugo/ouch heurethesan "fled/not found" (16:20) — different emphasis or progression within same event - 6th seal = FIRST VISION of second coming (wicked see Christ's face, "who can stand?") - 7th bowl = narrative ARRIVES at second coming ("It is done") - This demonstrates Revelation's recapitulation structure - Rev 6:17 poses a question ("who can stand?") answered in Rev 7 (the sealed 144,000)
From hist-14-seven-seals-span-history/CONCLUSION.md: - The sixth seal depicts the second coming with cosmic signs matching the Olivet Discourse - Shared vocabulary between Rev 6:12-17 and Matt 24:29-31 (sun, moon, stars, mountains, hiding) - The fifth seal's three temporal phases (past martyrdom, present waiting, future killing) require extended historical duration - 7-element sequential correspondence between seals and Olivet Discourse
From hist-16-bowls-after-judgment/CONCLUSION.md: - Bowls are "seven last plagues" (eschatai, Rev 15:1), implying prior plagues (trumpets) - Temple closed to entry (Rev 15:8) contrasts with trumpet introduction where intercession is active - Bowls lack the 1/3 fraction that defines every trumpet — different phase of judgment - Seventh bowl: "It is done" + greatest earthquake + islands/mountains gone = second coming - Narrative flows directly from 7th bowl through Babylon's fall (Rev 17-18) to Christ's return (Rev 19:11-21)
From revelation-historicist-proof/17-bowls-to-second-coming.md: - "I come as a thief" (Rev 16:15) within 6th bowl = second coming language - Rev 16:18 "great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth" echoes Rev 6:12 - Rev 16:20 "every island fled away, mountains not found" parallels Rev 6:14 "every mountain and island moved" - Rev 19:15 "he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God" = same winepress as Rev 14:19-20 - Rev 19:13 "vesture dipped in blood" echoes Isa 63:1-3 warrior treading the winepress
Focus Areas¶
- Rev 1:7 — Universal Visibility Eliminates Secrecy
- WHAT: Investigate the explicit statement "every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him." Determine how comprehensive this universality claim is.
- WHY: Tool discoveries show Rev 1:7 appears in both the JUDGMENT topic and LAMB OF GOD topic. The prior study (second-coming-revelation) identified the "all kindreds wail" chain connecting 1:7 to 6:15-16. This is the foundational text for eliminating any secret phase of the coming. Zech 12:10 is cited as OT source. The SIGN topic found MAT 24:30 ("sign of the Son of man in heaven... all the tribes of the earth mourn").
-
HOW: Retrieve full text of Rev 1:7 with chapter context. Run cross-testament parallels on REV 1:7 (both OT and NT). Run greek_parser.py on REV 1:7 to parse "every eye" (pas ophthalmos) and "shall see" (opsontai). Look up the OT source texts: Zech 12:10 and Dan 7:13. Retrieve Matt 24:30 for the "tribes mourn" parallel.
-
Rev 6:14-17 — Sixth Seal Cosmic Upheaval and Wrath of the Lamb
- WHAT: Investigate the cosmic signs (sun black, moon blood, stars fall, heaven departs, mountains/islands moved) and the universal reaction ("kings, great men, rich men, chief captains, mighty men, every bondman, every free man" hiding from "the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb").
- WHY: Tool discoveries show EARTHQUAKES topic lists REV 6:12-14 as SYMBOLICAL. The prior rev-6-14-vs-16-20-same-event study established this as the FIRST VISION of the second coming. hist-14 established shared vocabulary with Matt 24:29-31. The JUDGMENT topic lists REV 6:15-17. The completeness of the social classes listed (every rank from kings to slaves) parallels Rev 1:7's "every eye."
-
HOW: Retrieve Rev 6:12-17 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on REV 6:14 (kineō), REV 6:15-16 (the social classes), and REV 6:17 ("great day of his wrath"). Run cross-testament parallels on REV 6:14. Compare with Isa 34:4 (host of heaven dissolved, heavens rolled as scroll) and Joel 2:30-31 (blood, fire, sun/moon). Also compare with 2 Pet 3:10-12 (elements melt, heavens on fire).
-
Rev 14:14-20 — Harvest and Winepress: Son of Man on the Cloud
- WHAT: Investigate the dual harvest: (a) the grain harvest by the Son of Man on a white cloud with a sharp sickle (vv. 14-16), and (b) the grape harvest/winepress of the wrath of God (vv. 17-20). Determine whether these two harvests describe two aspects of one event.
- WHY: Tool discoveries show CLOUD topic lists REV 14:14 as SYMBOLICAL. WINE PRESS topic lists REV 14:19,20 as figurative judgment. The prior study identified Joel 3:13 ("Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe; the press is full") as the OT source combining both sickle and press in one verse. G3025 (lenos, winepress) appears only in Rev 14:19,20 and 19:15 in NT — binding these two passages.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rev 14:14-20 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on REV 14:14 (Son of Man, cloud, sickle), 14:19 (winepress), 14:20 (blood). Run cross-testament parallels on REV 14:15 and REV 14:19. Retrieve Joel 3:13-14 and Matt 13:39-43 (harvest = end of the world). Look up G3025 (lenos) with --verses.
-
Rev 19:11-21 — The Rider on the White Horse: Victory, Winepress, Beast Destroyed
- WHAT: Investigate Christ's return as conquering King — white horse, "Faithful and True," eyes as flame, vesture dipped in blood, sword from mouth, "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS," the winepress, and the beast/false prophet captured.
- WHY: Tool discoveries show ANTICHRIST topic lists REV 19:20 as destruction. LAMB OF GOD topic includes REV 17:14 ("Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings") and 19:17. The winepress (G3025) in 19:15 is the same word as 14:19-20. The "vesture dipped in blood" (19:13) echoes Isa 63:1-3 (H1660, H6333, H1869). The prior study confirmed the wrath/winepress chain as proof of one-event unity.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rev 19:11-21 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on REV 19:11-16 (key titles, winepress, sword). Run cross-testament parallels on REV 19:15. Retrieve Isa 63:1-6 in full. Compare Rev 19:13 "dipped in blood" with Isa 63:3 "their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments." Retrieve 2 Thess 2:8 for destruction of the lawless one "with the brightness of his coming."
-
The Winepress Chain: Isa 63:1-6 to Rev 14:19-20 to Rev 19:15
- WHAT: Trace the winepress imagery from OT to NT as a connecting chain proving these passages describe one event. Isaiah 63:1-6 is the warrior treading the winepress in anger. Rev 14:19-20 is the angel casting grapes into "the great winepress of the wrath of God." Rev 19:15 is Christ who "treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God."
- WHY: Tool discoveries found H1660 (gath, winepress) in Isa 63:2 and H6333 (purah, winepress) in Isa 63:3. G3025 (lenos, winepress) appears only in Rev 14:19,20 and 19:15. The WINE PRESS topic in Nave's explicitly lists Isa 63:2,3 under FIGURATIVE as "treading the winepress of sufferings" and Rev 14:19,20 under FIGURATIVE as "judgments of God." Joel 3:13 combines sickle and winepress. This chain is one of the strongest links proving one event.
-
HOW: Retrieve Isa 63:1-6 in full. Run hebrew_parser.py on ISA 63:3 to parse the treading/winepress vocabulary. Retrieve Joel 3:13. Retrieve Lam 1:15 (another H1660 usage). Run cross-testament parallels on ISA 63:3 (both directions). Create a word-chain table mapping H1660/H6333/H1869 through G3025/G3631.
-
The Cosmic Destruction Chain: Rev 6:14 = Rev 16:20 (Same Event, Different Sequences)
- WHAT: Investigate how Rev 6:14 ("every mountain and island were moved out of their places") and Rev 16:20 ("every island fled away, and the mountains were not found") describe the same event from different vantage points in the narrative, demonstrating recapitulation.
- WHY: The prior study (rev-6-14-vs-16-20-same-event) already established this connection, with Greek analysis of kineō vs pheugo. The EARTHQUAKES topic lists both REV 6:12-14 and REV 16:18,20 as SYMBOLICAL. hist-16 confirmed the 7th bowl reaches the second coming. The hist-17-bowls-to-second-coming file confirmed the parallel. This chain proves multiple sequences in Revelation converge on the same endpoint — a key historicist argument for recapitulation.
-
HOW: Retrieve Rev 6:12-17 and Rev 16:17-21 side by side. Run greek_parser.py on REV 6:14 and REV 16:20 to confirm the vocabulary difference (kineō vs pheugo). Also retrieve Rev 20:11 ("earth and heaven fled away") for the post-millennial parallel. Run cross-testament parallels on REV 16:20. Retrieve Isa 13:13-14 and Isa 24:19-20 as OT cosmic upheaval texts.
-
1 Thess 4:13-18 — The "Rapture" Passage: Public, Audible, Visible
- WHAT: Investigate the full passage that is the primary source for rapture doctrine. Determine whether the text describes a secret event or a maximally public one: "the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a SHOUT, with the voice of the ARCHANGEL, and with the TRUMP of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up (G726 harpazo) together with them in the clouds, to meet (G529 apantesis) the Lord in the air."
- WHY: Tool discoveries found G726 (harpazo) with 13 occurrences — "to seize, catch up" — and G529 (apantesis) with only 4 occurrences (Matt 25:1,6; Acts 28:15; 1 Thess 4:17). The RESURRECTION topic lists 1 Thess 4:14,16 as a key resurrection text. The TRUMPET topic lists 1 Thess 4:16 under SYMBOLICAL alongside 1 Cor 15:52 and Matt 24:31. The semantic search for "rapture caught up" returned TRIBULATION (0.42) and ARMAGEDDON (0.38) — suggesting the concept is eschatological, not a separate pre-tribulation event. The three sensory descriptors (shout, voice, trumpet) make this the LOUDEST event described in Scripture.
-
HOW: Retrieve 1 Thess 4:13-18 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on 1TH 4:16-17 (the entire passage). Look up G726 (harpazo) with --verses to see every usage. Look up G529 (apantesis) with --verses to see the civic delegation context: Matt 25:6 (virgins go out to MEET the bridegroom) and Acts 28:15 (Romans came to MEET Paul, then escorted him BACK). Run cross-testament parallels on 1TH 4:16 and 1TH 4:17.
-
The Apantesis (G529) — Civic Delegation Meaning Eliminates "Departure" Reading
- WHAT: Investigate the three NT uses of apantesis (G529): Matt 25:1,6 (virgins go out to meet bridegroom, then RETURN with him); Acts 28:15 (Roman Christians go out to meet Paul, then ESCORT him back); 1 Thess 4:17 (saints caught up to meet the Lord in the air). Determine the consistent pattern: the delegation goes OUT to meet the arriving dignitary and RETURNS with him.
- WHY: G529 is the noun form; G528 (apantao) is the verb. The semantic search for "meeting encounter civic delegation" found G528 (score 0.277) and G529 (score 0.276). In every NT usage, apantesis describes going out to meet someone who is ARRIVING, then accompanying them to the destination. This is a Greco-Roman civic custom (apantesis/adventus) where a city's delegation goes out to welcome an approaching ruler and escort them into the city. The pattern destroys the secret rapture reading: saints are not secretly removed — they are a welcoming party for the arriving King.
-
HOW: Retrieve all three apantesis (G529) passages: Matt 25:1-13, Acts 28:15, 1 Thess 4:17. Run greek_parser.py on each. Create a comparison table showing the pattern: who goes out, whom they meet, and what happens next. Also look up G528 (apantao) with --verses for the verb occurrences to check for consistent pattern.
-
Matt 24:29-31 — Elect Gathered AFTER Tribulation, Not Before
- WHAT: Investigate the Olivet Discourse timing: "Immediately AFTER the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven... And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds."
- WHY: Tool discoveries show the SIGN topic lists MAT 24:3,30. The EARTHQUAKES topic lists MAT 24:7. The RESURRECTION semantic search returned MAT 24:31 and MAT 25:1-13. hist-14 established a 7-element sequential correspondence between the Olivet Discourse and the seals. The timing word "AFTER" (meta) is explicit — the gathering of the elect follows the tribulation, not precedes it. The cosmic signs here (sun, moon, stars) match Rev 6:12-13 exactly. The mourning "all tribes" matches Rev 1:7.
-
HOW: Retrieve Matt 24:29-31 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on MAT 24:29 (meta, "after") and MAT 24:31 (episynago, "gather together"). Run cross-testament parallels on MAT 24:30 and MAT 24:31. Create a comparison table: Matt 24:29-31 vs Rev 6:12-17 vs Rev 1:7 (cosmic signs, universal mourning, gathering). Also retrieve Mark 13:24-27 (parallel account).

Against the Secret Rapture: No Biblical Basis for Two-Phase Coming
- WHAT: Investigate whether there is any biblical text that teaches a two-phase second coming (secret rapture followed by glorious appearing). Examine 2 Thess 2:1-8 (gathering and destruction at the same coming), 2 Thess 1:7-10 (apokalypsis = visible revelation = when He comes to be glorified), 1 Cor 15:51-52 (the "mystery" of change at the last trumpet), and the interchangeability of parousia/apokalypsis/epiphaneia.
- WHY: Tool discoveries found G3952 (parousia, 24 occ.), G2015 (epiphaneia, 6 occ.), and G602 (apokalypsis, 18 occ.) — three different Greek words used for the second coming. The prior study established Paul uses all three interchangeably for one event (2 Thess 2:1 parousia = 2:8 parousia = 2:8 epiphaneia = 1:7 apokalypsis). If these described two separate events, one would expect consistent vocabulary distinguishing them. The ANTICHRIST topic lists 2 Thess 2:3-12 and Rev 19:20 — the man of sin is destroyed at the parousia (2 Thess 2:8), and the beast is captured at Rev 19:20 — same event.
- HOW: Retrieve 2 Thess 1:7-10 and 2 Thess 2:1-8 with full chapter context. Run greek_parser.py on 2TH 2:1 (parousia + episynagoge), 2TH 2:8 (parousia + epiphaneia), and 2TH 1:7 (apokalypsis). Retrieve 1 Cor 15:51-52. Look up G3952 (parousia) with --verses. Look up G2015 (epiphaneia) with --verses. Create a table mapping every NT use of parousia, epiphaneia, and apokalypsis when referring to the second coming, showing they are interchangeable. Also retrieve Titus 2:13 ("the blessed hope, and the glorious appearing") and 1 Pet 1:7,13 (apokalypsis of Jesus Christ).
