Question

How do NT authors treat Daniel 7-12? Do Jesus, Paul, and John/Revelation treat these chapters as independent visions or as one unified prophetic system? How does Revelation 1:1 connect to Daniel 2:28, and what does the sealed-to-unsealed arc mean?

Topics

ANTICHRIST

  • General scriptures concerning: MAT 24:5,23,24,26; MRK 13:6,21,22; LUK 21:8; 2TH 2:3-12; 1JN 2:18,22; 4:3; 2JN 1:7
  • To be destroyed: REV 19:20; 20:10,15

Significance: The ANTICHRIST entry connects NT passages from three different authors (Jesus in the Synoptics, Paul in 2 Thessalonians, John in the epistles) and links them to Revelation's beast. All describe the same type of power, suggesting the NT authors saw a unified antagonist figure rooted in Daniel's visions.

PROPHECY

Inspiration and Fulfillment: - Inspired: ISA 28:22; LUK 1:70; 2TI 3:16; 2PE 1:21 - Sure fulfillment: EZK 12:22-25,28; HAB 2:3; MAT 5:18; 24:35; ACT 13:27,29 - Cessation of: LAM 2:9 - Of apostasy: 1JN 2:18; JUDE 1:17,18

Messianic Prophecy Chain (relevant to Daniel-Revelation): - ISA 9:7 with DAN 7:14,27 with LUK 1:32,33 -- the everlasting kingdom promise - This triple cross-reference (Isaiah > Daniel > Luke) shows how NT authors treated Daniel's kingdom prophecy as continuous with the messianic program

DANIEL

  • Prophecies of: DAN 4:8,9; 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; MAT 24:15
  • Wisdom of: DAN 1:17; EZK 28:3
  • Devoutness of: DAN 2:18; 6; 9; 10; 12; EZK 14:14

Significance: Nave's includes MAT 24:15 under Daniel's prophecies, recognizing that Jesus himself treated Daniel as a prophet whose words were still operative. Jesus said "spoken of by Daniel the prophet" -- explicitly attributing the abomination prophecy to Daniel.

SEAL

Figurative uses: - Of secrecy: DAN 12:9; REV 5:1 - Of certainty/divine approval: JHN 6:27; ROM 4:11; 2CO 1:22; EPH 1:13; 4:30; REV 7:3,4

Significance: The juxtaposition of DAN 12:9 (sealed vision) and REV 5:1 (sealed scroll that is OPENED) in the same topical entry points to the sealed-to-unsealed arc that frames the Daniel-Revelation relationship. Daniel's vision was sealed "to the time of the end" (12:9); Revelation's scroll is ceremonially unsealed by the Lamb (5:1-9).

VISION

Daniel's Visions: - Four beasts: DAN 7 - Ancient of Days: DAN 7:9-27 - Ram and he-goat: DAN 8 - Angel: DAN 10

John's Visions (Revelation): - Christ and lampstands: REV 1:10-20 - Book with seven seals: REV 5:1-5 - Beast from sea: REV 13:1-10 - Son of man with sickle: REV 14:14-16 - Angel proclaiming judgment: REV 14:6,7 - Temple opened: REV 15:5

Significance: The VISION entry places Daniel's and John's visions in the same category of divine revelation. The structural parallels are striking: Daniel sees beasts from the sea (Dan 7), John sees a beast from the sea (Rev 13). Daniel sees the Ancient of Days (Dan 7:9), John sees "one like the Son of man" (Rev 1:13). Daniel's book is sealed (Dan 12:4), John's book is unsealed (Rev 5:1-9).

BOOK (of Life)

  • DAN 12:1; REV 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12,15; 21:27; 22:19

Significance: The "book" concept links Dan 12:1 ("everyone that shall be found written in the book") directly to Revelation's book of life. This is one more thread connecting Daniel 12 to Revelation.

TEMPLE

Prophetic Destruction: - By Daniel: DAN 8:11-15; 11:30,31 - By Jesus: MAT 24; MRK 13:2; LUK 21:6

Figurative: - Ekklesia as temple: EPH 2:21; 2TH 2:4; REV 3:12 - Kingdom of Christ: REV 11; 14:15,17 - Forces of righteousness: REV 15:5-8; 16:1-17

Significance: The TEMPLE entry explicitly links Dan 8:11-15 and 11:30,31 (sanctuary attack) with 2TH 2:4 (man of sin in the temple) and REV 11 (temple measured). The Nave's categorization of 2TH 2:4 as figurative temple language suggests the sanctuary usurpation is not limited to a physical building.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

  • Parables of: MAT 13:24-50; 18:23-35; 25:1-30
  • Not of this world: JHN 18:36
  • Keys of: MAT 16:19

Significance: The "kingdom" concept connects Daniel's everlasting kingdom (Dan 7:14,27) with Jesus' kingdom parables and Revelation's kingdom consummation (Rev 11:15; 20:4; 22:5).

REVELATION (Nave's topic, score 0.67)

  • EXO 3:1-6,14; 1CH 28:11-19; MAT 3:17; 16:17; 17:5
  • God reveals through prophets, visions, and angels -- the same mechanism described in Rev 1:1

ABOMINATION (Nave's topic, score 0.57)

  • DEU 7:25; 27:15; 32:16; DEU 18:10,11; PRO 6:16-19; 11:20; 15:8,9
  • Broader OT context for the shiqquts/bdelygma word family that Daniel and the NT use as a technical prophetic term
