Question

What does Daniel 8's vision show (ram, he-goat, four horns, little horn)? Does the Hebrew grammar of Daniel 8:8-9 require the little horn to come from the four Greek horns? How does the yether progression (great -> very great -> exceeding great) prove the little horn must exceed Greece? How does Rome fulfill every criterion of the little horn, and why does Antiochus Epiphanes fail?

Topics

HORN

  • Literal uses: Anointing oil container (1SA 16:1; 1KI 1:39); trumpet
  • Figurative: Divine protection (2SA 22:3); power (1KI 22:11; PSA 89:24; 92:10; 132:17)
  • Symbolical (prophecy): DAN 7:7-24; 8:3-9,20; AMO 6:13; MIC 4:13; HAB 3:4; ZEC 1:18-21; REV 5:6; 12:3; 13:1,11; 17:3-16

Note for analysis: In Daniel's prophetic visions, horns consistently represent POWERS or KINGS. Gabriel explicitly interprets: "the two horns are the kings of Media and Persia" (Dan 8:20); "the great horn... is the first king" (8:21); "the ten horns... are ten kings" (7:24). This is not an imported meaning — the angel defines the symbol within the text itself.

DANIEL

  • Jewish captive, educated at king's court (DAN 1)
  • Interprets visions (DAN 2; 4; 5)
  • Prophecies: DAN 4:8,9; 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; MAT 24:15
  • Wisdom and devoutness (DAN 1:17; EZK 28:3; EZK 14:14)

Note for analysis: Jesus himself references Daniel as a prophet and directs attention to Daniel's prophetic writings (MAT 24:15: "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet").

PROPHECY

  • Inspired: ISA 28:22; LUK 1:70; 2TI 3:16; 2PE 1:21
  • Sure fulfillment: EZK 12:22-25,28; HAB 2:3; MAT 5:18; 24:35; ACT 13:27,29
  • Proof of God's foreknowledge: ISA 43:9

Note for analysis: The principle of sure fulfillment is essential. Daniel's prophecies contain specific, verifiable predictions about kingdoms, timelines, and events. The 70-weeks prophecy (Dan 9:24-27) is empirically verified (457 BC to AD 27/31/34). This establishes the reliability of Daniel's prophetic framework for the 2300 days and the little horn.

ROMAN EMPIRE

  • Rulers referenced in Scripture:
  • Augustus Caesar — LUK 2:1 (census at Christ's birth)
  • Tiberius Caesar — LUK 3:1 (Christ's ministry)
  • Claudius Caesar — ACT 18:2 (expelled Jews from Rome)
  • Nero — PHP 4:22 ("Caesar's household")
  • Legal system: Citizenship by birth or purchase (ACT 22:28); rights of citizens (ACT 16:37; 22:25-29); right of trial (ACT 25:16); right of appeal (ACT 25:10,21)

Note for analysis: The NT was written entirely under Roman rule. Rome's empire provided the political context for the life of Christ, the early church, and the destruction of Jerusalem (AD 70). The "people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary" (Dan 9:26) — fulfilled by Roman legions under Titus.

ROME

  • Capital of the Roman Empire
  • Jews excluded by Claudius (ACT 18:2)
  • Paul desired to preach there (ROM 1:15)
  • Christians present in Rome (ROM 16:5-17; PHP 1:12-18; 4:22; 2TI 4:21)

GABRIEL

  • A messenger of God
  • Appeared to Daniel: DAN 8:16; 9:21
  • Appeared in NT: To Zacharias (LUK 1:11-19); to Mary (LUK 1:26-29)

Note for analysis: Gabriel is the interpreting angel for BOTH Daniel 8 and Daniel 9. In Dan 8:16, Gabriel is commanded to "make this man to understand the vision." In Dan 9:21-22, Gabriel returns to complete the explanation. The same angel interprets both visions, linking them.

ABOMINATION

  • Idolatry (DEU 7:25; 27:15; 32:16)
  • Unclassified: DEU 22:5; PRO 3:32; 6:16-19; 8:7; 11:20; 12:22; etc.

Note for analysis: The "abomination of desolation" (Dan 8:13; 11:31; 12:11; MAT 24:15) is related but distinct from general abominations. The specific phrase combines pesha ("transgression/rebellion") with shomem ("desolating") — an active, ongoing system of desolation.

TEMPLE

  • Solomon's Temple: Destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar (2KI 24:13; 25:9-17)
  • Second Temple: Restored by Zerubbabel (EZR 1-6); prophecies of restoration (ISA 44:28; DAN 8:13,14)
  • Herod's Temple: Destruction foretold by Daniel (DAN 8:11-15; 11:30,31) and by Jesus (MAT 24; MRK 13:2; LUK 21:6)
  • Vessels used by Belshazzar (DAN 5:2,3)

Note for analysis: The Temple references in Daniel 8 (sanctuary, host, place of sanctuary) establish that the little horn's activities include religious/spiritual warfare — not merely military conquest. The "place of his sanctuary was cast down" (8:11) and the sanctuary is "given to be trodden under foot" (8:13).

ISRAEL, PROPHECIES CONCERNING

  • War and judgments (nation from afar): DEU 28:49-57; 2KI 20:17,18; DAN 9:26,27; 11:30-45
  • Prophecies concerning their captivity and restoration

Note for analysis: Deuteronomy 28:49-50 prophesies a "nation from far... as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; a nation of fierce countenance (az panim)." This is universally recognized as describing Rome's conquest of Judea (fulfilled AD 70). The same phrase az panim appears in Dan 8:23.
