Origin of the Nephilim¶
Question¶
The angel view claims the Nephilim were angel-human hybrids, explaining their extraordinary size. If the "sons of God" were just humans (Sethite view), how do we explain the giants?
Summary Answer¶
The biblical evidence shows that Nephilim were not angel-human hybrids. Genesis 6:4 explicitly states Nephilim existed BEFORE the "sons of God" unions began, which is fatal to the hybrid theory. Furthermore, post-flood "nephilim" (the Anakim) have fully traceable human genealogies, and the extraordinary pre-flood lifespans (800-970 years) provide a natural explanation for larger body sizes.
Key Verses¶
Genesis 6:4 - "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown."
Numbers 13:33 - "And there we saw the giants [nephilim], the sons of Anak, which come of the giants [nephilim]..."
Joshua 15:13-14 - "...the city of Arba the father of Anak... And Caleb drove thence the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak."
Genesis 5:27 - "And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died."
Analysis¶
1. The Timing Problem (Genesis 6:4)¶
The most decisive evidence against the hybrid theory is the timing phrase in Genesis 6:4:
"There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that..."
This means Nephilim existed: - BEFORE the "sons of God" took wives ("in those days") - AFTER the unions ("and also after that")
If Nephilim were the offspring of these unions, they could only exist AFTER, not before. The text explicitly states they pre-existed the unions. This is fatal to the hybrid theory.
2. Post-Flood "Nephilim" Have Human Genealogies¶
The spies in Numbers 13:33 called the Anakim "nephilim." But we know the Anakim's lineage:
If "nephilim" required angel parentage, the term could not apply to the Anakim. But Scripture does apply it. This proves "nephilim" simply means "giants," not "angel-human hybrids."
3. ALL Post-Flood Giants Are Human¶
Every giant mentioned after the flood has traceable human ancestry:
| Giants | Lineage | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Anakim | Arba > Anak > 3 sons | Josh 15:13-14 |
| Emims | "A people great, and many, and tall" | Deut 2:10-11 |
| Zamzummims | "A people great, and many, and tall" | Deut 2:20-21 |
| Og | "A man" - king of Bashan | Deut 3:11 |
| Goliath | Philistine of Gath | 1 Sam 17:4 |
| Giants of Gath | "Born to the giant" - family | 2 Sam 21:16-22 |
Not one post-flood giant is attributed to angel parentage. All are described using human terms: "a people," "a man," "sons of," "born to."
4. Pre-Flood Lifespans Explain Larger Size¶
Genesis 5 records pre-flood lifespans of 800-970 years - 10-12 times longer than modern lifespans. Longer life means: - Extended growth periods - More time for physical development - Different environmental conditions
This same pattern appears in the fossil record - ancient creatures were often significantly larger than modern counterparts (larger insects, reptiles, mammals). No supernatural hybridization is required; pre-flood conditions naturally produced larger organisms.
5. The Word "Nephilim" Itself¶
Strong's H5303 defines nephilim as "a feller, i.e. a bully or tyrant" - translated "giant." The root is naphal ("to fall"), but this doesn't require "fallen angel" origin. It could mean: - Those who fell morally - Those who cause others to fall (tyrants) - Simply a descriptor of their imposing nature
The application of "nephilim" to the Anakim (with known human genealogy) proves the term describes what they WERE (giants/tyrants), not HOW they originated.
Word Studies¶
| Term | Strong's | Meaning | Key Finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nephilim | H5303 | giants/tyrants | Applied to Anakim with human lineage |
| Rephaim | H7497 | giant tribe | Listed among Canaanite peoples |
| Anakim | H6062 | long-necked ones | Descended from Arba, "a man" |
| Raphah | H7498 | the giant | Human ancestor of Gath giants |
The Hybrid Theory's Problems¶
- Timing contradiction: Nephilim existed BEFORE the "sons of God" unions (Gen 6:4)
- Post-flood existence: "Nephilim" in Canaan were Anakim with human genealogy
- No angel lineage: Every biblical giant traces to human parents
- Natural explanation available: Pre-flood longevity (800-970 years) explains larger size
- Fossil parallel: Same size pattern observed in ancient creatures (no angels involved)
- Human terminology: All giants called "a people," "a man," "sons of," "born to"

| moses-angel-terminology | Moses uses "malak" for angels, never "bene elohim" |
Conclusion¶
The "Nephilim = angel-human hybrids" explanation:
- Contradicts Genesis 6:4 timing - Nephilim existed before the unions
- Cannot explain post-flood nephilim - Anakim with human genealogies
- Ignores natural explanation - Pre-flood longevity produced larger humans
- Lacks biblical support - No giant is attributed to angel parentage
- Misunderstands the word - "Nephilim" describes what they were, not their origin
The biblical evidence shows Nephilim were simply large, powerful humans - a natural result of pre-flood conditions and genetic variation, not supernatural parentage. The term "nephilim" means "giants" or "tyrants," as proven by its application to the Anakim whose human lineage is explicitly stated.
