NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Heb 7:21 0.360 age, priest
Heb 7:24 0.340 age, priesthood
Heb 5:6 0.336 age, priest
Heb 7:17 0.330 age, priest
Heb 1:8 0.325 age [forever]
Heb 7:3 0.324 father, priest
Heb 7:11 0.324 priest, priesthood
Heb 7:28 0.323 age
Heb 2:17 0.322 priest
Heb 8:3 0.321 priest

SIGNIFICANCE: Hebrews 7 explicitly argues that the Aaronic priesthood (called "everlasting" in Exo 40:15) was superseded by a different priesthood order. This proves olam did not mean "endless" for this institution.

Exodus 21:6 — slave serves "forever"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Deut 15:17 0.530 age, awl, door, ear
1 Chr 17:25 0.419 ear
Ezek 45:4 0.417 approach, serve
Exo 28:43 0.417 age, approach, serve
Jer 35:15 0.397 ear, serve
2 Chr 30:8 0.394 age, serve
2 Sam 7:29 0.385 age

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Rev 2:7 0.364 ear
Luk 13:25 0.351 door
Rom 16:27 0.337 age
2 Pet 1:11 0.332 age
2 Tim 4:18 0.332 age

SIGNIFICANCE: Deut 15:17 is the direct parallel — same institution, same olam. The slave serves "forever" but clearly only for his natural lifetime. This is the clearest finite-duration use of olam.

Jonah 2:6 — earth's bars "forever"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Job 38:16 0.389 ocean, unto
Job 38:30 0.388 ocean, water
Ps 124:5 0.380 soul, water
Ps 74:13 0.379 head, water
Ps 106:9 0.375 ocean, rush
Num 21:4 0.372 rush, soul, turn
Hab 3:15 0.362 water

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Acts 27:7 0.270 (nautical)
Mat 14:28 0.249 water
2 Pet 3:6 0.244 water

SIGNIFICANCE: Jonah was in the fish's belly "forever" — three days. This is the most dramatic finite-duration use of olam, reducing "forever" to approximately 72 hours. The word here means "the time seemed interminable" — a subjective/experiential use.

1 Kings 8:13 — Solomon's temple "forever"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
2 Chr 6:2 0.612 age, build, dominion, sit
2 Sam 7:13 0.408 age, build, dominion
Ps 49:12 0.405 age
Ps 78:69 0.390 age, build
1 Chr 17:12 0.372 age, build
2 Sam 7:16 0.367 age, dominion
Isa 58:12 0.341 age, build, sit

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
2 Cor 5:1 0.333 age, build
Acts 7:49 0.274 build, dominion
Mk 10:30 0.272 age
Lk 1:33 0.261 age, dominion

SIGNIFICANCE: Solomon's temple, built to stand "forever," was destroyed by Babylon in 586 BC. The second temple was destroyed in AD 70. The "forever" dwelling place has been absent for nearly 2,000 years.

Deuteronomy 33:27 — "everlasting arms"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Ezek 36:2 0.451 age, hostile, place
Ps 68:2 0.429 hostile
Deut 25:19 0.428 hostile, part
Jer 19:7 0.413 consume, hostile, place
Ps 143:3 0.403 age, hostile, place

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
1 Cor 5:13 0.368
Heb 3:12 0.368 age
2 Thess 1:9 0.356 age
Mat 10:28 0.336 consume
Mat 25:46 0.335 age
Mat 25:41 0.333 age

SIGNIFICANCE: When olam modifies God ("the eternal God"), it carries maximal duration. The NT parallel to 2 Thess 1:9 and Mat 25:46 connects this to eschatological judgment terminology.

Psalm 90:2 — God "from everlasting to everlasting"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Deut 32:18 0.474 bear, cry
Mic 4:10 0.468 bear, cry, unto
Job 15:7 0.449 bear, cry
Isa 26:18 0.420 bear, cry, world
1 Chr 16:30 0.390 cry, world

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Mat 4:8 0.320 mountain, world
Jude 1:21 0.317 age, unto
Jn 3:16 0.307 age, world
1 Jn 2:17 0.304 age, world

SIGNIFICANCE: "From olam to olam" is the superlative construction applied to God's existence. This is the benchmark for olam at its most absolute.

Isaiah 34:10 — Edom's smoke "forever"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Isa 60:15 0.447 age, neg, pass [forever]
Job 15:30 0.404 burn, dry
Exo 30:8 0.393 age, burn
Ps 49:20 0.392 age, glory
Isa 51:6 0.389 age, burn
Prov 27:24 0.383 age [forever]
Ps 103:9 0.381 age, glory

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Rev 14:11 0.401 age, burn [continual, forever]
1 Tim 1:17 0.357 age, glory [forever]
2 Pet 3:18 0.353 age, glory
Mat 13:40 0.353 age, burn
Rev 22:5 0.347 age [forever]
Rev 20:10 0.332 age, burn [continual, forever]

SIGNIFICANCE: This is a critical test case. Isaiah says Edom's smoke goes up "forever" (olam) and the land lies waste "for ever and ever" (netsach + olam). Yet the same prophecy describes animals inhabiting the desolate land (34:11-17). The NT parallels to Rev 14:11 and 20:10 show the same imagery reused for final judgment — raising the question of whether the same figurative/hyperbolic dynamic applies.

Jeremiah 17:4 — fire burns "forever"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Jer 15:14 0.601 burn, hostile, kindle, know
Deut 32:22 0.514 burn, kindle, nose, unto
Jer 16:13 0.438 know, serve
Deut 25:19 0.437 heritage, hostile
Dan 3:17 0.414 burn, serve

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Heb 6:8 0.401 burn, unto
2 Pet 3:7 0.388 burn, unto
Lk 12:49 0.370 burn, kindle
Heb 12:18 0.351 burn, kindle
Jude 1:6 0.319 age, unto

SIGNIFICANCE: The "forever" fire of God's anger against Judah was fulfilled in the Babylonian destruction of 586 BC. The fire did not literally burn forever. Cf. Jer 17:27 where the same fire imagery is applied to Jerusalem's gates — historically fulfilled. This establishes that "burn forever" can describe complete, irreversible destruction rather than literally unending combustion.

Daniel 12:2 — "everlasting life" and "everlasting contempt"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Isa 26:19 0.449 alive, dust, summer
Job 34:15 0.382 dust
Job 7:16 0.359 age, alive
Ps 89:37 0.354 age
Jer 23:40 0.352 age, reproach
Gen 2:7 0.351 alive, dust, soil

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Lk 18:30 0.343 age, alive
Mat 25:46 0.334 age, alive
2 Cor 2:16 0.324 alive
Gal 6:8 0.313 age, alive
1 Jn 5:11 0.312 age, alive
Tit 1:2 0.310 age, alive
Jn 6:47,58 0.305 age, alive
Rom 6:22 0.302 age, alive

SIGNIFICANCE: This is the key OT passage paralleling Mat 25:46. The Hebrew uses olam for both "life" and "contempt." The parallel structure ("some to X and some to Y") uses the same word for both outcomes. The question is whether "everlasting contempt" (deraon) describes an ongoing state of being despised or the permanent result of destruction.

Malachi 1:4 — indignation against Edom "forever"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Ezek 25:13 0.489 edom, ruin
Amos 1:11 0.473 edom, return
Jer 49:13 0.438 age, curse, ruin
Isa 58:12 0.432 age, build, call, return

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Rom 3:16 0.284 ruin
Heb 6:8 0.281 curse, unto
Mat 25:46 0.270 age

SIGNIFICANCE: God's indignation against Edom "for ever" describes the permanent destruction of a nation, not ongoing punishment of individuals. Edom as a nation no longer exists — the "forever" result was accomplished historically.

Habakkuk 3:6 — "everlasting mountains scattered"

OT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Jer 6:16 0.447 age, see, stand, walk
Ecc 1:4 0.435 age, stand, walk
Deut 33:15 0.434 age, hill, mountain
Jon 2:7 0.428 age, mountain
Isa 2:2 0.420 hill, mountain

NT Parallels (hybrid)

Reference Score Key Terms
Lk 23:30 0.351 hill, mountain
Mk 13:14 0.349 mountain, see, stand
Lk 18:30 0.319 age
Mat 25:46 0.311 age

SIGNIFICANCE: Here olam describes mountains as "everlasting" — yet the same verse says God "scattered" them. The "everlasting" mountains are not actually everlasting when God acts. This demonstrates that olam describes perceived permanence from a human perspective, not absolute ontological endlessness.
