A. The Immortality Word-Study Passages

1. 1 Corinthians 15:42-54 -- The Resurrection Chapter

Context (1 Corinthians 15:21-26) -- Death through Adam, life through Christ:

15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 15:26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

Key passage (1 Corinthians 15:42-54):

15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption [G5356 phthora]; it is raised in incorruption [G861 aphtharsia]: 15:43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 15:48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption [G5356 phthora] inherit incorruption [G861 aphtharsia]. 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible [G862 aphthartos], and we shall be changed. 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption [G861 aphtharsia], and this mortal [G2349 thnetos] must put on immortality [G110 athanasia]. 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption [G861 aphtharsia], and this mortal [G2349 thnetos] shall have put on immortality [G110 athanasia], then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Word-study density: This single passage contains G110 (athanasia) x2, G861 (aphtharsia) x4, G2349 (thnetos) x2, G862 (aphthartos) x1, G5356 (phthora) x2.

2. 1 Timothy 6:14-16 -- God "Who Only Hath Immortality"

Context (1 Timothy 6:11-19):

6:11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 6:13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 6:14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: 6:15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 6:16 Who only hath immortality [G110 athanasia], dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 6:19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Note: v.12 and v.19 both use "lay hold on eternal life" -- framing eternal life as something to be grasped, not already possessed. v.16 states God "only" (monos) hath immortality.

3. Romans 2:7 -- Seeking Immortality

Context (Romans 2:4-11):

2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 2:6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality [G861 aphtharsia], eternal life: 2:8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 2:9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

Note: The contrast structure: seek immortality -> receive eternal life (v.7) vs. obey unrighteousness -> receive wrath (v.8-9).

4. 2 Timothy 1:8-12 -- Christ Brought Life and Immortality to Light

Context:

1:8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality [G861 aphtharsia] to light through the gospel: 1:11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

5. Romans 6:12 -- Mortal Body

6:10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal [G2349 thnetos] body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

6. Romans 8:9-13 -- Quickening Mortal Bodies

8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal [G2349 thnetos] bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

7. 2 Corinthians 4:7-14 -- Life Manifest in Mortal Flesh

4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 4:10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 4:11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal [G2349 thnetos] flesh. 4:14 Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

8. 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 -- Mortality Swallowed Up of Life

5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 5:3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 5:4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality [G2349 thnetos] might be swallowed up of life. 5:5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

9. 1 Timothy 1:17 -- God Called Immortal

1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1:16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal [G862 aphthartos], invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

10. Romans 1:23 -- Uncorruptible God vs. Corruptible Man

1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible [G862 aphthartos] God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Note: God is "uncorruptible" (aphthartos); man is "corruptible" (phthartos). The text places these in direct contrast.

11. 1 Peter 1:3-5, 23 -- Incorruptible Inheritance and Seed

1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 1:4 To an inheritance incorruptible [G862 aphthartos], and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible [G862 aphthartos], by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

12. 1 Peter 3:3-4 -- The Incorruptible Ornament

3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible [G862 aphthartos], even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

13. 1 Corinthians 9:25 -- Incorruptible Crown

9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. 9:25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible [G862 aphthartos]. 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

15. Genesis 3:22-24 -- Tree of Life (E006 in master)

3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

16. Psalm 49:7-9, 14-15, 20 -- Redemption of the Soul; Man Perishes Like Beasts

49:7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: 49:8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:) 49:9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption. 49:10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. 49:12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish. 49:14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling. 49:15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. 49:20 Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

17. Psalm 16:10-11 -- Not Left in Sheol

16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell [sheol]; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Note: Peter interprets this of Christ's resurrection in Acts 2:25-31; Paul does likewise in Acts 13:34-37.

18. Proverbs 14:32

14:32 The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

19. Ecclesiastes 3:19-21 -- One Breath, One Fate

3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. 3:20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 3:21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

20. Isaiah 25:6-9 -- Death Swallowed Up in Victory

25:6 And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined. 25:7 And he will destroy in this mountain the face of the covering cast over all people, and the vail that is spread over all nations. 25:8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. 25:9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Note: This is the OT passage quoted in 1 Cor 15:54 -- "Death is swallowed up in victory."

21. Isaiah 26:19 -- Thy Dead Shall Live

26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

22. Luke 20:34-38 -- Equal Unto the Angels; Cannot Die Anymore

20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 20:36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. 20:37 Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 20:38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

23. John 3:14-16, 36 -- Everlasting Life Through Belief

3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Note: The contrast: "not perish, but have everlasting life." This implies that without belief, one perishes rather than receiving everlasting life.

24. John 5:24-29, 39-40 -- Life in the Son

5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 5:29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

25. John 6:27, 39-40, 44, 47, 50-51, 53-54, 58 -- Bread of Life Discourse

6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 6:39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. 6:68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

26. John 10:27-28 -- Eternal Life Given; Shall Never Perish

10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

27. John 11:25-26 -- I Am the Resurrection and the Life

11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

28. John 14:19 -- Because I Live, Ye Shall Live Also

29. John 17:2-3 -- Eternal Life Defined

17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

30. Romans 5:15-21 -- Free Gift Unto Life

5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 5:16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

31. Romans 6:22-23 -- Wages of Sin vs. Gift of God

6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

32. Galatians 6:7-8 -- Sow to Flesh: Corruption; Sow to Spirit: Life

6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption [G5356 phthora]; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

33. Colossians 1:5-6 -- Hope Laid Up in Heaven

1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; 1:6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

34. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 -- Resurrection and Gathering (E040 in master)

4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

35. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 -- Everlasting Destruction

1:7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

36. Titus 1:2 -- Promise of Eternal Life

38. 1 Peter 1:3-5 -- Incorruptible Inheritance

39. 1 John 2:17, 25 -- Doing the Will of God; Promise of Eternal Life

40. 1 John 5:11-13, 20 -- This Life Is in His Son

5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

41. Revelation 22:5 -- Reign For Ever and Ever

22:3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: 22:4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

C. Mortality of Man

42. Job 4:17-21 -- Shall Mortal Man Be More Just Than God? (E038 in master)

4:17 Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker? 4:18 Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly: 4:19 How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth? 4:20 They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it. 4:21 Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

43. Ecclesiastes 2:14-16 -- One Event Happeneth to All

2:14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all. 2:15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity. 2:16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

44. Ecclesiastes 3:20 -- All Are of Dust

3:20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

45. 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 -- In Adam All Die (see section A above)

46. Hebrews 9:27 -- Appointed Once to Die (E046 in master)

9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

D. Corruption/Incorruption Contrast Passages

47. Romans 8:19-23 -- Bondage of Corruption

8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption [G5356 phthora] into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

48. 2 Peter 1:3-4 -- Partakers of the Divine Nature; Escaping Corruption

1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption [G5356 phthora] that is in the world through lust.

49. 2 Peter 2:12, 19 -- Perishing in Their Own Corruption

2:12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption [G5356 phthora]; 2:19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption [G5356 phthora]: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

Acts Passages on Corruption/Diaphthora (G1312)

Acts 2:25-31 -- Peter's Pentecost sermon quoting Ps 16:

2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell [hades], neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption [G1312 diaphthora]. 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell [hades], neither his flesh did see corruption [G1312 diaphthora].

Acts 13:34-37 -- Paul in Antioch quoting Ps 16:

13:34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption [G1312 diaphthora], he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David. 13:35 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption [G1312 diaphthora]. 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption [G1312 diaphthora]: 13:37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption [G1312 diaphthora].

E. Angels and Immortality

50. Luke 20:36 -- Equal Unto the Angels (see section B #22 above)

20:36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

F. Life as a Divine Gift

52. Deuteronomy 30:15-20 -- Life and Death Set Before You

30:15 See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 30:20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days.

53. Deuteronomy 8:3 -- Man Lives by Every Word

8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

54. Job 27:3 -- Breath and Spirit of God

27:2 As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul; 27:3 All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;

55. Psalm 68:20 -- Unto God Belong the Issues from Death

68:20 He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.

56. Acts 17:25-28 -- In Him We Live and Move (E036 in master)

17:25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 17:26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

57. Romans 6:23 -- The Gift of God Is Eternal Life

6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Additional Supporting Passages

Titus 2:7 -- Sincerity (G861 aphtharsia used as "uncorruptness"):

2:7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,

Ephesians 6:24 -- Grace in Sincerity (G861 aphtharsia):

6:24 Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.

Note: These two uses of aphtharsia (G861) translated "sincerity/uncorruptness" rather than "immortality/incorruption" show the word's range of meaning: genuineness, purity, that which is untainted by decay or corruption.

Titus 3:5-7 -- Heirs According to Hope of Eternal Life:

3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Jude 1:21 -- Looking for Eternal Life:

1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Colossians 2:22 -- Perish with the Using (G5356 phthora):

2:22 Which all are to perish with the using; after the commandments and doctrines of men?

Cross-Testament Parallels

Notable Parallel Connections

  1. 1 Tim 6:16 <-> 1 Tim 1:17 (Hybrid 0.448): Both are doxologies to God using immortality/incorruptibility language. 1:17 calls God "immortal" (aphthartos); 6:16 says God "only hath immortality" (athanasia).

  2. 1 Tim 6:16 <-> 1 Cor 15:50 (Hybrid 0.425): Both share "immortality" keyword. 1 Cor 15:50 adds that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

  3. 2 Tim 1:10 <-> Rom 5:21 (Hybrid 0.490): Both connect Christ, death, and life/immortality. Rom 5:21: grace reigns through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ.

  4. 2 Tim 1:10 <-> 2 Cor 4:11 (Hybrid 0.461): Both discuss the manifestation of life through death -- Christ's death and life made manifest in mortal flesh.

  5. John 3:16 <-> John 6:40 (Hybrid 0.518): Both present the believe -> everlasting life pattern. Both include "everyone" who believes.

  6. John 3:16 <-> Gen 3:22 (OT, Hybrid 0.408): The OT parallel tool links "everlasting life" in John 3:16 to "live for ever" in Gen 3:22 -- connecting the offer of eternal life to the barring from the tree of life.

  7. Luke 20:36 <-> Matt 22:30 / Mark 12:25 (Hybrid 0.500/0.435): Synoptic parallels. Matthew and Mark report the same teaching but without Luke's addition of "neither can they die any more."

  8. 1 Cor 15:53 <-> 1 Cor 15:54 (Hybrid 0.605): These are paired statements; v.53 states the necessity ("must put on"), v.54 states the fulfillment ("shall have put on").
