Bible Study: One People or Two Programs? Testing FUT's Israel/Church Distinction¶
Question¶
Does the Bible teach one unified people of God or two separate programs for Israel and the Church? Comprehensive test of FUT's Israel/Church distinction across both testaments. Examine: Rom 9:6-8 ("not all Israel which are of Israel"), Rom 11:17-24 (olive tree -- one tree, faith as condition), Gal 3:7-29 ("if ye be Christ's then are ye Abraham's seed"), Gal 6:16 ("Israel of God"), Eph 2:11-22 ("one new man," wall broken down), 1 Pet 2:9-10 (Israel's titles applied to the Church), John 10:16 ("one fold, one shepherd"), Acts 7:38 ("the ekklesia in the wilderness"), the OT remnant principle (1 Kings 19:18, Isa 10:21-22, Rom 9:27, 11:5), and the Abrahamic covenant (Gen 12:3, 22:18, Gal 3:16,29 -- one seed Christ, one people in Christ).
Prior Research Summary¶
From Prior Studies¶
Three directly relevant studies have been completed:
-
nt-identity-of-israel -- Established that Paul distinguishes ethnic origin from true covenant identity in Rom 9:6; identified the singular "seed" of Abraham as Christ (Gal 3:16); found Israel's covenant titles (Exo 19:5-6) applied to the church in 1 Pet 2:9; established ekklesia/qahal linguistic connection (Acts 7:38); analyzed the olive tree as ONE tree with faith as the criterion (Rom 11:17-24); and concluded "fulfillment theology" -- the church IS Israel expanded through Christ.
-
rom-11-29-ametameleta-israel-identity -- Detailed word study on ametameleta (G278), finding it means "not regretted" not "legally irrevocable"; demonstrated charisma (G5486) and klesis (G2821) in Rom 11:29 refer to grace-gifts for believers, not ethnic national privileges; found the remnant principle (Rom 11:5-7) establishes that authentic Israel was always the believing minority; concluded Rom 11:29 does not support a sharp Israel/Church distinction.
-
pvj-15-gentile-mission -- Established that Jesus initiated Gentile inclusion before Paul; demonstrated John 10:16 prophesied one fold; found Peter first brought gospel to Gentiles (Acts 10); 36 explicit statements supporting continuity.
What this study must add: While prior studies have covered many individual texts, this study must (a) systematically test the six convergent NT texts cited in the study plan (Gal 3:28-29, Rom 9:6-8, Rom 11:17-24, Eph 2:14-16, 1 Pet 2:9, Rom 2:28-29) from three different authors using different metaphors, (b) trace the OT remnant principle as a precursor to NT fulfillment theology, (c) examine the Abrahamic covenant as the foundation for the one-people thesis, and (d) investigate Bohr's additional arguments (Rev 12 one woman, twelve/twelve continuity, bride continuity).
From External Sources (Leads to Verify)¶
- EGW/pioneers uniformly equate Israel with the Christian church (Miller's index: "ISRAEL = Christian church")
- Uriah Smith: after branches broken off and Gentile grafts inserted, "there are still twelve branches, or tribes, in the household of faith"
- Josiah Litch: "whether Jews or Gentiles, all who believed were the seed of Abraham according to promise"
- Bohr: Revelation 12's single woman represents both OT Israel and NT Church; the twelve/twelve structure (patriarchs/apostles) signals continuity; the olive tree root = Jesus
- Bohr: Israel was God's OT "bride" (Jer 6:2) and the church is God's NT "bride" (Rev 12:1)

Focus Areas¶
-
The Abrahamic Covenant as Foundation for One People: WHAT -- Trace the Abrahamic covenant from Gen 12:1-3 through Gen 15, 17, 22 to its NT interpretation in Rom 4, Gal 3, and Heb 6:13-14. WHY -- The naves_semantic.py results show COVENANT as the highest-scoring topic (0.68), and the Nave's ABRAHAM entry explicitly links Gen 12:1-3 to Gal 3:6-18,29 and Rom 4:1-22. If the Abrahamic promise has always been about faith (Gen 15:6; Rom 4:3), then the one-people thesis has its foundation in the oldest covenant. HOW -- Retrieve full text of Gen 12:1-3; 15:1-6; 17:1-8; 22:15-18; Rom 4:1-25 (full chapter); Gal 3:1-29 (full chapter); Heb 6:13-18. Run cross-testament parallels on Gen 12:3 and Gal 3:16. Look up G4690 (sperma) with --verses to trace seed terminology.
-
Paul's Redefinition of Israel in Romans 9:6-8: WHAT -- Analyze Paul's thesis that "they are not all Israel, which are of Israel" and his distinction between children of the flesh and children of the promise. WHY -- This is the foundational text for the one-people thesis in Paul's most systematic letter. The prior study (nt-identity-of-israel) found the grammatical distinction between genitive "from Israel" and nominative "Israel," but this study must examine it in the full context of Rom 9-11 as a unit. HOW -- Retrieve Rom 9:1-33 (full chapter); run greek_parser.py on Rom 9:6-8 to verify the grammatical construction; run cross-testament parallels on Rom 9:6. Look up G4690 sperma usage in Rom 9:7-8.
-
The Olive Tree Metaphor (Rom 11:17-24) -- One Tree, Not Two: WHAT -- Examine the olive tree as a metaphor for one continuous people of God with faith as the criterion for membership. WHY -- The Nave's GRAFTING entry points exclusively to Rom 11:17-24. The CHURCH entry lists this under "Unity of" alongside Eph 2:14-19 and Gal 3:26-28. The direction of grafting is critical: Gentiles are grafted INTO Israel's tree, not into a separate tree. HOW -- Retrieve Rom 11:1-36 (full chapter); run greek_parser.py on Rom 11:17-24 to analyze the grafting vocabulary; run cross-testament parallels on Rom 11:17. Trace the condition language: "because of unbelief they were broken off" (11:20), "if they abide not still in unbelief" (11:23).
-
Ephesians 2:11-22 -- One New Man, Wall Broken Down: WHAT -- Analyze Paul's teaching that Christ "hath made both one" and created "one new man" by breaking down the "middle wall of partition." WHY -- The RECONCILIATION entry from Nave's explicitly cites Eph 2:15-18 as reconciliation between God and man. The CHURCH entry lists Eph 2:19-22 under both "HOUSEHOLD OF GOD" and "HABITATION OF GOD" titles. This passage uses unique vocabulary (mesotoichon, hapax legomenon) that requires Greek parsing. HOW -- Retrieve Eph 2:1-22 (full chapter); run greek_parser.py on Eph 2:14-16 for mesotoichon and ktise; run cross-testament parallels BOTH directions on Eph 2:14.
-
1 Peter 2:9-10 -- Israel's Covenant Titles Applied to the Church: WHAT -- Examine how Peter applies Israel's foundational identity titles from Exo 19:5-6 to the mixed Jew-Gentile church. WHY -- The CHOSEN entry from Nave's explicitly cites 1 Pet 2:9. The CHURCH entry lists this passage under the church's identity designations. The ADOPTION entry includes the broader context of spiritual sonship. If Peter, writing to Gentile-majority churches, calls them "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people," this is a direct transfer of Israel's identity. HOW -- Retrieve 1 Pet 2:1-12; retrieve Exo 19:1-8 for the original covenant language; run cross-testament parallels on 1 Pet 2:9 (BOTH directions); compare Hos 2:23 and 1 Pet 2:10 for "not my people" reversal.
-
The Remnant Principle as Precursor (OT to NT): WHAT -- Trace the remnant concept from its OT roots through to Paul's application in Rom 9:27 and 11:5. WHY -- The semantic_strongs.py search identified multiple Hebrew remnant words (H7604 shaar, H7611 sheerith, H7605 shear) and Greek equivalents (G2640 kataleimma, G3005 leimma). The ISRAEL PROPHECIES entry references both restoration and judgment prophecies. The remnant principle shows that even within ethnic Israel, the true people of God were always a believing subset -- this directly undermines the claim that all ethnic Israel constitutes God's people. HOW -- Retrieve 1 Ki 19:18; Isa 10:20-22; Isa 1:9; Rom 9:27-29; Rom 11:1-7. Run search_strongs.py --lexicon on H7611 and G2640 and G3005. Run cross-testament parallels on Isa 10:21 and Rom 11:5.
-
Acts 7:38 -- Ekklesia in the Wilderness (Linguistic Continuity): WHAT -- Examine Stephen's use of ekklesia for the OT congregation of Israel and its implications for Israel-Church continuity. WHY -- The CHURCH entry explicitly notes the linguistic overlap: "Called THE CONGREGATION in the O.T. ... Called CHURCH in the N.T." The semantic_strongs.py results show G1577 (ekklesia) as the top result for assembly/congregation (score 0.424), with the Hebrew equivalent H6951 (qahal). If the LXX consistently translated qahal as ekklesia, the NT church and OT Israel share the same foundational term. HOW -- Retrieve Acts 7:37-38; look up G1577 (ekklesia) with search_strongs.py --lexicon and --verses; look up H6951 (qahal) with search_strongs.py --lexicon; run search_strongs.py --lxx-map H6951 to verify the qahal-ekklesia LXX connection.
-
Galatians 6:16 -- "The Israel of God": WHAT -- Determine whether "the Israel of God" in Gal 6:16 refers to the church (epexegetical kai) or to ethnic Jewish believers (additive kai). WHY -- The CHURCH entry explicitly lists "ISRAEL OF GOD: Gal 6:16" as one of the church's titles. This is the only place in the NT where "Israel" appears with a qualifier ("of God"), suggesting a deliberate redefinition. HOW -- Retrieve Gal 6:11-18 (broader context); run greek_parser.py on Gal 6:16 to analyze the kai construction; run cross-testament parallels on Gal 6:16.
-
John 10:16 -- "One Fold, One Shepherd": WHAT -- Analyze Jesus's prophecy of one fold incorporating "other sheep" not of this fold. WHY -- The CHURCH entry lists "FOLD OF CHRIST: Jhn 10:16" as one of the church's designations. Jesus himself, not just Paul or Peter, prophesied the merging of Jew and Gentile into one flock. This is significant because dispensationalist arguments often claim the one-people thesis is a Pauline innovation. HOW -- Retrieve Jhn 10:1-18; run cross-testament parallels BOTH directions on Jhn 10:16; compare with Ezk 34:23-31 and 37:24 (one shepherd prophecies).
-
Romans 2:28-29 -- Inward vs. Outward Jew: WHAT -- Examine Paul's teaching that the true Jew is one inwardly, by circumcision of the heart. WHY -- This is one of the six convergent NT texts listed in the study plan. The GENTILES conversion section cites Rom 9:22-30 and the ADOPTION entry cites Rom 9:8,26 -- but Rom 2:28-29 establishes the principle earlier in the letter, before Paul's extended argument in Rom 9-11. HOW -- Retrieve Rom 2:17-29 (broader context); run greek_parser.py on Rom 2:28-29; trace the concept of "circumcision of the heart" back to Deu 30:6 and Jer 4:4 via cross-testament parallels.

External corpus verification directives:
- For claims #1 and #3 (children of God denial, all believers = Abraham's seed): Retrieve Rom 9:6-8 and Gal 3:7-29 with Greek parsing. Verify that Paul's argument is about faith-identity, not ethnic identity.
- For claim #2 (twelve branches in household of faith): Retrieve Rev 21:12-14, Mat 19:28, Luk 22:30. Check whether twelve-tribe/twelve-apostle structure represents one people.
- For claim #4 (Rev 12 one woman): Retrieve Rev 12:1-17 and trace the woman through all three phases (pre-Christ, Christ event, post-Christ church).
- For claim #5 (twelve/twelve continuity): Compare Mat 19:28 with Rev 21:12-14.
- For claim #6 (olive tree root = Jesus): Retrieve Rom 11:16-18 with Greek parsing; compare Rom 15:12 (root of Jesse), Rev 5:5 (Root of David), Rev 22:16.
- For claim #7 (bride continuity): Retrieve OT bride texts (Jer 6:2; Hos 2:19-20; Isa 54:5-6) and NT bride texts (2 Cor 11:2; Eph 5:25-32; Rev 19:7-8; Rev 21:9). Run cross-testament parallels on Isa 54:5 and Eph 5:25.
- For claim #8 (Miller's Isa 45 identification): Retrieve Isa 45:4-25 and check whether "Israel mine elect" and the universal salvation call support Miller's equation.
- For claim #9 (no national boundaries): Retrieve Eph 2:14-22 and Gal 3:28 with Greek parsing.
