Question

What is the preterist reading of Daniel as a complete interpretive system — not individual claims, but the hermeneutical logic, the overarching narrative, and how all the pieces fit together?

Topics

PROPHECY

  • Inspired: ISA 28:22; LUK 1:70; 2TI 3:16; 2PE 1:21
  • Sure fulfillment: EZK 12:22-25,28; HAB 2:3; MAT 5:18; 24:35; ACT 13:27,29
  • Cessation of: LAM 2:9
  • Messianic passages quoted in NT: extensive cross-testament chain
  • Key for PRET framework: the question of whether Daniel's prophecies have a temporal scope cap (Maccabean era) or extend to the eschatological horizon

DANIEL

  • Jewish captive, also called BELTESHAZZAR
  • Interprets visions: DAN 2; 4; 5
  • Prophecies of: DAN 4:8,9; 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; MAT 24:15
  • Wisdom of: DAN 1:17; EZK 28:3
  • Devoutness of: DAN 2:18; 6; 9; 10; 12; EZK 14:14
  • Key: Daniel personally addressed in Dan 12:13 with resurrection promise — a framework-breaking datum for PRET

RESURRECTION

  • General scriptures: JOB 14:12-15; 19:25-27; PSA 16:9,10; 17:15; 49:15; ISA 25:8; 26:19; EZK 37:1-14; DAN 12:2,3,13; HOS 13:14
  • NT: MAT 22:23-32; 24:31; 25:1-13; JHN 5:21,25,28,29; ACT 2:26-31; ROM 4:16-21; 1CO 6:14; 15:12-57; 1TH 4:14,16; REV 1:18; 20:4-6,13
  • Figurative: ROM 6:4; EPH 2:1,5,6; COL 2:12
  • Typified: Isaac (GEN 22:13 with HEB 11:19), Jonah (JON 2:10 with MAT 12:40)
  • Key: Dan 12:2 uses dual-outcome bodily resurrection language (everlasting life vs. shame/everlasting contempt), anchored by dera'on hapax pair to Isa 66:24. The Ezk 37 metaphorical defense is invalid: Ezk 37 has single national outcome, Dan 12:2 has dual individual outcomes.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

  • Parables: MAT 13:24-50; 18:23-35; 20:1-16; 22:2-14; 25:1-30
  • Not of this world: JHN 18:36
  • Children of the kingdom: MAT 18:3; 19:14
  • Righteousness, peace, joy: ROM 14:17
  • Key: PRET maps Dan 2:44's stone to Christ's inaugurated kingdom. This is actually one of PRET's stronger arguments (inaugurated-kingdom texts: Matt 12:28, Col 1:13, Heb 12:28). But it requires ka-chadah simultaneous destruction to be metaphorical.

QUOTATIONS AND ALLUSIONS

The extensive NT quotation of OT prophecy is relevant because three independent NT authors (Jesus, Paul, John) all extend Daniel's imagery beyond the Maccabean era. This is not a single author's interpretation but a cross-authorial pattern.

INTERPRETATION

Nave's entry is minimal (dreams, foreign tongues). The hermeneutical questions about Daniel — literal vs. day-year time, single vs. multiple fulfillment, Maccabean scope cap — are not addressed in Nave's topical system because these are systematic-theology level questions.
