Revelation 12:5
Greek: καὶ ἔτεκεν υἱόν, ἄρσεν, ὃς μέλλει ποιμαίνειν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐν ῥάβδῳ σιδηρᾷ·
καὶ ἡρπάσθη τὸ τέκνον αὐτῆς πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν καὶ πρὸς τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ.
Key terms:
- ἔτεκεν (eteken) = V-2AAI-3S τίκτω — Aorist Active Indicative, "she brought forth" — PAST TENSE
- ἡρπάσθη (herpasthe) = V-API-3S ἁρπάζω — Aorist Passive Indicative, "was caught up" — PAST TENSE
Both aorists = completed past actions from John's perspective
HIST reads: birth and ascension of Christ are past events when Rev written (~AD 95)
FUT counter: prophetic aorist (proleptic), narrating future as past for vividness
2 Thessalonians 2:3
Greek: μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον· ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον
καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας,
Key terms:
- ἀποστασία (apostasia) G646 = Nom Sg F — "falling away/defection/apostasy"
Only 2 NT occurrences: here and Acts 21:21 (forsake Moses)
BOTH = religious defection, NOT rapture/departure
Feminine noun: cannot mean "physical departure" without extreme semantic stretching
- ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας (anthropos tes anomias) = "man of lawlessness"
Daniel vocabulary fusion: speaks against God (Dan 7:25), exalts self (Dan 11:36),
sits in temple (Dan 8:11 sanctuary), son of destruction (Dan 9:26-27)
- ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (ho huios tes apoleias) = "son of perdition/destruction"
Same phrase used for Judas (John 17:12) — not merely future figure
2 Thessalonians 2:7
Greek: τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας·
μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται.
Key terms:
- ἤδη (ede) = "already" — temporal adverb
- ἐνεργεῖται (energeitai) = V-PMI-3S ἐνεργέω — Present Middle Indicative, "is working/operating"
Present tense = ongoing activity at time of writing (c. AD 51)
"Mystery of lawlessness ALREADY IS WORKING" — process Antichrist, not merely future
- ὁ κατέχων (ho katechon) = Present Active Participle, "the one restraining" — ongoing restraint
Combined with 1 John 2:18 "even now are there many antichrists" = apostolic present reality
Mark 13:14
Greek: Ὅταν δὲ ἴδητε τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως ἑστηκότα ὅπου οὐ δεῖ
Key terms:
- βδέλυγμα (bdelygma) G946 = N-ASN Accusative Singular NEUTER — "abomination"
- ἑστηκότα (hestekota) = V-RAP-ASM Perfect Active Participle Accusative Singular MASCULINE
GRAMMATICAL ANOMALY: neuter noun (bdelygma) with MASCULINE participle (hestekota)
This is constructio ad sensum — Mark sees personal agency behind the abomination
The abomination is not a thing but a PERSON "standing where he ought not"
Contrast Matt 24:15: ἑστός (hestos) = Perfect Active Participle Accusative Singular NEUTER
Matthew uses neuter agreeing with bdelygma; Mark deliberately breaks gender agreement
Romans 11:25-26
Rom 11:25: πώρωσις ἀπὸ μέρους τῷ Ἰσραὴλ γέγονεν ἄχρι οὗ τὸ πλήρωμα τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰσέλθῃ
Key terms:
- ἄχρι οὗ (achri hou) = "until" — temporal conjunction implying terminus
πώρωσις (porosis) = "hardening/blindness" — from πωρόω
"Blindness in part has happened to Israel UNTIL the fullness of the Gentiles comes in"
FUT reads: achri hou implies the hardening will end = future restoration of national Israel
Counter: "until" marks duration, not necessarily reversal (cf. Matt 1:25 "until she brought forth")
Rom 11:26: καὶ οὕτως πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ σωθήσεται
- οὕτως (houtos) = "in this manner/so" — adverb of manner, NOT temporal "and then"
"And SO all Israel shall be saved" — describes the MANNER of salvation
Could mean: "in this way" (through grafting of Gentiles AND believing Jews) = spiritual Israel
Or: "and THEN" (after Gentile fullness) = future national Israel restoration
- σωθήσεται (sothesetai) = Future Passive Indicative, "shall be saved"
Revelation 17:8
Greek: τὸ θηρίον ὃ εἶδες ἦν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν, καὶ μέλλει ἀναβαίνειν ἐκ τῆς ἀβύσσου...
ὅτι ἦν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν καὶ παρέσται.
Key terms:
- ἦν (en) = V-IAI-3S εἰμί — Imperfect Active Indicative, "was" — PAST
- οὐκ ἔστιν (ouk estin) = V-PAI-3S εἰμί — Present Active Indicative "is not" — PRESENT
- παρέσται (parestai) = V-FDI-3S πάρειμι — Future Middle Indicative "shall be present" — FUTURE
Three-phase temporal formula: WAS / IS NOT / YET IS (shall be present)
FUT argues: explicit past-gap-future structure = biblical precedent for prophetic gaps
HIST/PRET counter: this describes the beast's WOUND AND RECOVERY, not a general gap principle
Note: KJV "yet is" renders παρέσται; more precisely "shall come" or "shall be present again"
Matthew 24:15
Greek: Ὅταν οὖν ἴδητε τὸ βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ Δανιὴλ τοῦ προφήτου ἑστὸς ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ
Key terms:
- βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως (bdelygma tes eremoseos) = "abomination of desolation"
Direct Daniel citation: Dan 9:27, 11:31, 12:11
- τὸ ῥηθὲν (to rhethen) = Aorist Passive Participle "the thing spoken"
- διὰ Δανιὴλ τοῦ προφήτου = "through Daniel THE PROPHET"
Jesus: (1) treats Daniel as prophet, (2) treats event as FUTURE (ὅταν ἴδητε = "when you see")
194 years after Antiochus IV — if already fulfilled, Jesus's future reference is redundant
- ἑστὸς (hestos) = Perfect Active Participle Accusative Singular NEUTER — agrees with bdelygma
Contrast Mark 13:14 masculine hestekota — Matthew preserves neuter grammatical agreement
Galatians 3:28
Greek: οὐκ ἔνι Ἰουδαῖος οὐδὲ Ἕλλην, οὐκ ἔνι δοῦλος οὐδὲ ἐλεύθερος,
οὐκ ἔνι ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ· πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς εἷς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ.
Key terms:
- οὐκ ἔνι (ouk eni) G1762 = "there is no" — Present Active Indicative, absolute categorical denial
Three pairs demolished: Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female
- εἷς ἐστε (heis este) = "you are ONE" — masculine numeral εἷς with plural verb
πάντες (pantes) = "all" — ALL believers without exception
"In Christ Jesus" = the sphere where these distinctions cease to operate
Ephesians 2:14
Greek: Αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστιν ἡ εἰρήνη ἡμῶν, ὁ ποιήσας τὰ ἀμφότερα ἓν
καὶ τὸ μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ λύσας, τὴν ἔχθραν, ἐν τῇ σαρκὶ αὐτοῦ
Key terms:
- μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ (mesotoichon tou phragmou) G3320 = "middle wall of partition/fence"
Hapax legomenon — only here in NT. Metaphor for barrier between Jew and Gentile.
- λύσας (lysas) = Aorist Active Participle from λύω "having destroyed/broken down"
Aorist = completed action — wall ALREADY broken down in Christ's flesh
- τὰ ἀμφότερα ἓν (ta amphotera hen) = "the both ONE" — TWO made into ONE entity
This demolishes the FUT distinction between Israel and Church as separate divine programs
Revelation 13:5
Greek: καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα καὶ βλασφημίας,
καὶ ἐδόθη αὐτῷ ἐξουσία ποιῆσαι μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο.
Key terms:
- στόμα λαλοῦν μεγάλα (stoma laloun megala) = "a mouth speaking great things"
Direct verbal link to LXX Dan 7:8 "a mouth speaking great things"
στόμα = G4750, λαλοῦν = Present Active Participle of λαλέω, μεγάλα = G3173
- μῆνας τεσσεράκοντα δύο (menas tesserakonta duo) = "forty-two months"
= 1260 days = time, times, half a time — seven cross-canonical expressions of same period
Revelation 4:1
Greek: Ἀνάβα ὧδε (Anaba hode) = "Come up here"
- Ἀνάβα = V-2AAM-2S ἀναβαίνω — Aorist Active Imperative SECOND PERSON SINGULAR
Address is to JOHN personally ("I" saw, "the first voice... talking with ME")
Not a corporate address to the church. φωνή addressed to εμοῦ (me, first person singular)
FUT rapture reading requires "come up here" to mean universal church departure
But grammar: 2nd person singular imperative to one specific person
1 Thessalonians 4:16
Greek: ὅτι αὐτὸς ὁ Κύριος ἐν κελεύσματι, ἐν φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου καὶ ἐν σάλπιγγι Θεοῦ,
καταβήσεται ἀπ' οὐρανοῦ, καὶ οἱ νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ ἀναστήσονται πρῶτον,
Key terms:
- κελεύσματι (keleusmati) G2752 = "shout/command" — dative of accompaniment
- φωνῇ ἀρχαγγέλου (phone archangelou) = "voice of archangel"
- σάλπιγγι Θεοῦ (salpingi theou) = "trumpet of God"
THREE LOUD, PUBLIC ELEMENTS: shout, voice, trumpet — visible, audible Second Coming
Contrast Rev 4:1: private vision to ONE person with "a voice... like a trumpet"
Three "coming" words interchangeable in Paul:
parousia (G3952) — 1 Thess 4:15
apokalypsis (G602) — 2 Thess 1:7
epiphaneia (G2015) — 2 Thess 2:8
All refer to the SAME visible, public event — proves one Second Coming, not two
Ephesians 2:15
Greek: τὸν νόμον τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐν δόγμασιν καταργήσας, ἵνα τοὺς δύο κτίσῃ ἐν αὑτῷ εἰς ἕνα καινὸν ἄνθρωπον ποιῶν εἰρήνην,
Key terms:
- καταργήσας (katargesas) G2673 = V-AAP-NSM — Aorist Active Participle, "having abolished/annulled"
Object: τὸν νόμον τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐν δόγμασιν = "the law of commandments in ordinances"
Aorist = completed action — the law of commandments ALREADY abolished in Christ
- κτίσῃ (ktise) G2936 = V-AAS-3S κτίζω — Aorist Active Subjunctive, "might create"
Purpose clause (ἵνα): Christ abolished the law SO THAT he might create ONE new man
- ἕνα καινὸν ἄνθρωπον (hena kainon anthropon) = "one new man/person"
ἕνα = ONE (G1520); καινὸν = NEW (G2537, qualitatively new); ἄνθρωπον = man/person (G444)
TWO (Jew and Gentile) → ONE NEW entity — not two separate programs
- ποιῶν εἰρήνην (poion eirenen) = Present Active Participle "making peace" — ongoing result
Ephesians 2:16
Greek: καὶ ἀποκαταλλάξῃ τοὺς ἀμφοτέρους ἐν ἑνὶ σώματι τῷ Θεῷ διὰ τοῦ σταυροῦ, ἀποκτείνας τὴν ἔχθραν ἐν αὐτῷ·
Key terms:
- ἀποκαταλλάξῃ (apokatallaxe) G604 = V-AAS-3S — Aorist Active Subjunctive, "might reconcile"
ἀπο-κατ-αλλάσσω = compound: fully (apo) + back (kata) + reconcile (allasso) — complete reconciliation
- τοὺς ἀμφοτέρους (tous amphoterous) G297 = "the BOTH" — both groups (Jew and Gentile)
- ἐν ἑνὶ σώματι (en heni somati) = "in ONE body" — εἷς (G1520) + σῶμα (G4983)
Both groups reconciled to God in ONE body through the cross
- ἀποκτείνας (apokteinas) G615 = V-AAP-NSM — Aorist Active Participle, "having killed/slain"
Object: τὴν ἔχθραν = "the enmity/hostility" (G2189) — the barrier is SLAIN, dead
Combined with 2:14 lysas (having destroyed the wall): wall destroyed + enmity slain = total demolition
NOTE: Eph 2:14-16 uses FOUR completed-action terms (lysas, katargesas, ktise, apokteinas) to describe
the Jew/Gentile unification as accomplished fact. This directly counters FUT's Israel/Church distinction.
1 Thessalonians 4:17
Greek: ἔπειτα ἡμεῖς οἱ ζῶντες οἱ περιλειπόμενοι ἅμα σὺν αὐτοῖς ἁρπαγησόμεθα ἐν νεφέλαις
εἰς ἀπάντησιν τοῦ Κυρίου εἰς ἀέρα· καὶ οὕτως πάντοτε σὺν Κυρίῳ ἐσόμεθα.
Key terms:
- ἁρπαγησόμεθα (harpagesometha) G726 = V-2FPI-1P ἁρπάζω — Future Passive Indicative 1st Plural
"we shall be caught up/snatched" — same root as Rev 12:5 herpasthe (Christ caught up to God)
Future tense — the gathering has not yet happened; this is the one Second Coming event
- εἰς ἀπάντησιν (eis apantesin) G529 = "to a meeting/encounter"
apantesis = technical term for civic reception: citizens go OUT to meet arriving dignitary, then ESCORT BACK
Used in Matt 25:6 (virgins go out to MEET bridegroom) and Acts 28:15 (Romans go out to MEET Paul)
Pattern: go out → meet → return together. NOT: go out → stay away. The Lord CONTINUES to earth.
- ἐν νεφέλαις (en nephelais) = "in clouds" — PUBLIC, visible event (cf. Rev 1:7 "every eye shall see")
- πάντοτε σὺν Κυρίῳ (pantote syn Kyrio) = "always with the Lord" — permanent reunion
Contrast Rev 4:1: John alone, private vision, singular address. 1 Thess 4:17: corporate, public, plural.
