Key Grammatical Observations

Dan 10:13 -- "One of the Chief Princes"

  • echad (Noun.s.Cst, "one of") + ha-sarim (Art + Noun.mp, "the chiefs/princes") + ha-rishonim (Art + Adj.mp, "the first/foremost")
  • The construct chain "one of the first/foremost princes" grammatically places Michael within a category. PRET uses this to argue Michael is a created being among equals. HIST notes the progression: 10:13 "one of" -> 10:21 "your" -> 12:1 "the great" shows ascending uniqueness.

Dan 11:31 vs. Dan 8:11 -- Tamid Removal Verbs

  • Dan 8:11: hurim (rum, H7311, Hophal.Perf.3ms) -- "was exalted/lifted" -- passive of "to be high"
  • Dan 11:31: hesiru (sur, H5493, Hiphil.Perf.3p) -- "they caused to turn aside" -- active causative, plural subject
  • Dan 12:11: husar (sur, H5493, Hophal.Perf.3ms) -- "was caused to turn aside" -- passive
  • The verb change from rum to sur, and the shift from singular to plural subject, are data points for both PRET and HIST readings.

Dan 11:35-36 Transition

  • 11:35 ends with "ad eth qets ki od la-mo'ed" (until the time of the end, for yet the appointed time)
  • 11:36 begins with "v'asah ki-rtsono ha-melekh" (and the king shall do according to his will)
  • No explicit subject-change marker. The article ha-melekh ("the king") could resume the existing subject or introduce a new one. PRET argues continuity; HIST argues the kir'tsono chain (8:4->11:3->11:16->11:36) marks a world-power transition.

Dan 12:10 Purification Triad -- Stem Change from 11:35

  • 11:35: tsaraph (Qal InfCon), barar (Piel InfCon), laban (Hiphil InfCon) -- purpose/result infinitives
  • 12:10: barar (Hithpael Impf.3mp), laban (Hithpael Impf.3mp), tsaraph (Niphal Impf.3mp) -- reflexive/passive finite verbs
  • The shift from infinitives of purpose to reflexive/passive finite forms marks a progression: 11:35 describes the purpose of suffering (to refine); 12:10 describes the achieved state (they have purified themselves).
