Question

What does Daniel 2 establish (E/N), and how do the three readings compare at the inference level?

Topics

DANIEL

A Jewish captive, also called Belteshazzar. Educated at king's court (Dan 1). Interprets visions (Dan 2; 4; 5). Promotion and executive authority (Dan 2:48,49; 5:11,29; 6:2). Prophecies of (Dan 4:8,9; 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; Mat 24:15). Wisdom of (Dan 1:17; Ezk 28:3). Devoutness of (Dan 2:18; 6; 9; 10; 12; Ezk 14:14). Courage and fidelity (Dan 4:27; 5:17-23; 6:10-23). Worshiped by Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 2:6).

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

Compared: to a man who sowed good seed (Mat 13:24-30,38-43; Mk 4:26-29); to a granule of mustard seed (Mat 13:31,32; Mk 4:30,31; Lk 13:18,19); to leaven (Mat 13:33; Lk 13:21); to a treasure (Mat 13:44); to a pearl (Mat 13:45); to a net (Mat 13:47-50); to a king reckoning with servants (Mat 18:23-35); to a householder (Mat 20:1-16); to a marriage feast (Mat 22:2-14; Lk 14:16-24); to ten virgins (Mat 25:1-13); to a man traveling to a far country (Mat 25:14-30; Lk 19:12-27). "My kingdom is not of this world" (Jn 18:36). Children of the kingdom (Mat 18:3; 19:14; Mk 10:14; Lk 18:16). Rich people cannot enter (Mat 19:23,24; Mk 10:23-25). Keys of (Mat 16:19). Good news of (Lk 8:1). Mysteries of (Lk 8:10). Does not consist of meat and drink (Rom 14:17).

STONES

Figurative: Of temptation, "Stone of Stumbling" (Isa 8:14; Rom 9:33; 1 Pet 2:8). Of Christ, "a Tested Stone," "a Precious Stone," "a Sure Foundation" (Isa 28:16). Of Christ's rejection, the rejected Cornerstone (Psa 118:22; Mat 21:42-44; Mk 12:10; Lk 20:17,18; Acts 4:11; 1 Pet 2:4). The True Foundation (Isa 28:16; Mat 16:18; 1 Cor 3:11; Eph 2:20; Rev 21:14). Of Christ, the Water of Life (1 Cor 10:4).

Symbolical: Of the kingdom of Christ (Dan 2:34,45).

Note: Nave's explicitly identifies Dan 2:34,45 as symbolical of "the kingdom of Christ" -- this is the traditional identification across all positions.

IRON

First recorded use (Gen 4:22). Furnace (Deut 4:20; 1 Ki 8:51; Jer 11:4). Rods for scourging (Psa 2:9; Rev 2:27; 12:5; 19:15). Yokes (Deut 28:48; Jer 28:13,14). Idols (Dan 2:33; 5:4,23). Figurative (2 Sam 23:7; Jer 15:12; 1 Tim 4:2).

Key observation: Iron has both literal uses and extensive figurative/symbolic usage. The "iron furnace" = bondage (Deut 4:20; 1 Ki 8:51); "iron yoke" = oppressive rule (Jer 28:13-14); "rod of iron" = messianic/divine rule (Psa 2:9; Rev 2:27; 12:5; 19:15); "iron sinew" = stubbornness (Isa 48:4). This supports the PRET argument that iron symbolizes crushing severity as a quality, not exclusively an empire identifier.

CLAY

Man formed from (Job 33:6). Used by potter (Isa 29:16; 41:25; 45:9). Figurative: human frailty (Job 4:19; Psa 40:2; Isa 45:9; 64:8; Jer 18:6; Rom 9:21). Symbolical (Dan 2:33-41).

Key observation: Nave's lists NO religious or ecclesiastical symbolism for clay. The figurative uses are consistently about human weakness/frailty before God (potter/clay imagery).

BABYLON

City of: Built by Nimrod (Gen 10:10). Capital of the kingdom (Dan 4:30; 2 Ki 25:13; 2 Chr 36:6-20). Prophecies concerning (Psa 87:4; 137:8,9; Isa 13; 14:4-26; 47; Jer 50; 51; Dan 2:21-38; 5:25-29; 7). Figurative (Rev 14:8; 16:19; 17; 18). Empire: Extent under Nebuchadnezzar (Dan 2:37,38; 4:1; 6:1). Government: a limited monarchy (Est 1:13-19; Dan 6:8,14,17). Tyrannical (Est 3:7-15; Dan 3).

PROPHECY

Inspired (Isa 28:22; Lk 1:70; 2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:21). Sure fulfillment (Ezk 12:22-25,28; Hab 2:3; Mat 5:18; 24:35; Acts 13:27,29). Proof of God's foreknowledge (Isa 43:9). OT Messianic passages quoted in NT include Psa 118:22,23 -> Mat 21:42; Isa 28:16 -> Rom 9:33; 1 Pet 2:6; Isa 9:7 -> Dan 7:14,27 -> Lk 1:32,33.

VISION

A mode of revelation (Num 12:6; 1 Sam 3:1; Dan 1:17; Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17). Of Daniel: Dan 7; 8; 10.

PERSIA

Extent of empire (Est 1:1; Dan 6:1). Transition from Babylon (Dan 5:28,31). Prophecies (Dan 2:31-45; 7; 8; 11:1-4). Cyrus prophecies (Isa 41:2-3; 44:28; 45:1-4). Restoration decree (2 Chr 36:22-23; Ezra 1).

ROME / ROMAN EMPIRE

Augustus (Lk 2:1). Tiberius (Lk 3:1). Claudius (Acts 18:2). Nero (Phil 4:22). Roman citizenship and rights (Acts 16:37; 22:25-29; 25:10-16). Paul's letter to Rome (Rom 1:7,15-18).

Note: Nave's does NOT explicitly connect Rome to Daniel's fourth kingdom. The connection is inferred, not stated in the topical dictionary.

ANTICHRIST

General scriptures concerning (Mat 24:5,23,24,26; Mk 13:6,21,22; Lk 21:8; 2 Th 2:3-12; 1 Jn 2:18,22; 4:3; 2 Jn 1:7). To be destroyed (Rev 19:20; 20:10,15).

DREAM

Revelations by (Num 12:6; Jer 23:28; Joel 2:28; Acts 2:17). Instances: Pharaoh (Gen 41:1-36), interpreted by Joseph (Gen 41:25-32). Daniel (Dan 2:16-23,28-30; 4). Daniel's dream concerning the four beasts (Dan 7). False prophets pretended to receive revelations through dreams (Deut 13:1-5; Jer 23:25-32; 27:9). See VISION.

KING

Called KING OF KINGS (Ezr 7:12; Ezk 26:7; Dan 2:37). Divinely authorized (Deut 17:15; 1 Sam 9:16,17; Prov 8:15; Dan 2:21,37; 4:17; 5:20). Hereditary succession (2 Sam 7:12-16; 1 Ki 1:28-30). Constitutional restrictions (Deut 17:18-20; 1 Sam 10:24,25; Dan 6:12-15). Decrees of, irrevocable (Est 8:8; Dan 6:8,9,12-15). Provincial governors (Dan 6:1-3).

Key observation: Nave's identifies Dan 2:37 under "King of Kings" and Dan 2:21 under "Divinely authorized" -- both relevant to the sovereignty theme in Daniel's prayer/hymn.

ANCIENT OF DAYS

Dan 7:9,13,22. A title for God in Daniel's night vision, describing the divine judge who presides over the four-beast vision.

SUCCESSION

Heb 7:1-28 (priestly succession). The concept of ordered succession is relevant to the batarakh (H870) vocabulary in Dan 2:39.
