Question¶
How does dispensationalist futurism read Daniel 2, and what is the textual basis for the gap between Rome and the stone?
Topics¶
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN¶
Compared to parables of growth and reckoning: sowing good seed (MAT 13:24-30), mustard seed (MAT 13:31-32), leaven (MAT 13:33), treasure (MAT 13:44), pearl (MAT 13:45), net (MAT 13:47-50), king's reckoning (MAT 18:23-35), householder (MAT 20:1-16), marriage feast (MAT 22:2-14; LUK 14:16-24), ten virgins (MAT 25:1-13), talents (MAT 25:14-30; LUK 19:12-27). Jesus declares "My kingdom is not of this world" (JHN 18:36). Rich cannot enter (MAT 19:23-24). Not meat and drink but righteousness, peace, joy (ROM 14:17). Keys given to Peter (MAT 16:19). Cross-references: CHURCH; JESUS, KINGDOM OF.
Relevance: The FUT reading claims the stone-kingdom is entirely future (millennial). The Nave's entry shows Jesus teaching the kingdom as a PRESENT reality through parables of growth (mustard seed, leaven) and reckoning. JHN 18:36 is ambiguous -- FUT reads "not of this world" as supporting future earthly establishment; others read it as describing a spiritual kingdom already present.
STONES¶
Figurative uses: Stone of stumbling (ISA 8:14; ROM 9:33; 1PE 2:8); tested stone, sure foundation (ISA 28:16); rejected cornerstone (PSA 118:22; MAT 21:42-44; MRK 12:10; LUK 20:17-18; ACT 4:11; 1PE 2:4); true foundation (ISA 28:16; MAT 16:18; 1CO 3:11; EPH 2:20; REV 21:14); spiritual Rock (1CO 10:4). SYMBOLICAL: Of the kingdom of Christ DAN 2:34,45.
Relevance: Nave's explicitly categorizes Dan 2:34,45 as symbolic of Christ's kingdom. The stone/cornerstone chain runs from OT through NT: Psa 118:22 -> Isa 8:14 -> Isa 28:16 -> Mat 21:42-44 -> Act 4:11 -> Rom 9:33 -> 1Pe 2:4-8. Jesus explicitly applies the "rejected stone" to himself, and adds the crushing element (likmao, G3039) that links directly to Dan 2:44 via the LXX.
DANIEL¶
A Jewish captive (Belteshazzar) who interpreted visions (DAN 2; 4; 5), had prophetic visions (DAN 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12), and is referenced by Jesus (MAT 24:15). Promoted to executive authority (DAN 2:48-49; 5:11,29; 6:2).
Relevance: Daniel 2 and 7 are the foundation texts. Jesus' reference to Daniel in Mat 24:15 ("the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet") validates Daniel's prophetic authority.
ROMAN EMPIRE¶
Ruled by Augustus Caesar (LUK 2:1), Tiberius (LUK 3:1), Claudius (ACT 18:2), Nero (PHP 4:22). Citizenship rights (ACT 16:37; 22:25-29). Right of trial and appeal (ACT 25:10,16,21).
Relevance: The Nave's entry confirms Rome's historical existence as the ruling empire during the NT period. All four schools (HIST, PRET, FUT, IDE) identify Rome as the iron legs. The question is what comes AFTER Rome.
KING¶
Kings are divinely authorized (DEU 17:15; PRO 8:15; DAN 2:21,37; 4:17; 5:20). Called KING OF KINGS (EZR 7:12; DAN 2:37). God changes times and seasons, removes and sets up kings (DAN 2:21). God gave Nebuchadnezzar kingdom, power, strength, and glory (DAN 2:37).
Relevance: Dan 2:21,37 establish that Nebuchadnezzar's authority is DIRECTLY from God ("God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom"). This supports Darby's degenerative principle -- the first kingdom receives divine authorization directly.
IRON¶
Used for rods of scourging (PSA 2:9; REV 2:27; 12:5; 19:15). Idols made of iron (DAN 2:33; 5:4,23). Figurative of hardness (2SA 23:7; JER 15:12; 1TI 4:2).
Relevance: The "rod of iron" chain (Psa 2:9 -> Rev 2:27 -> Rev 12:5 -> Rev 19:15) connects Christ's ruling authority to the iron imagery. This creates a potential intertextual link between Daniel 2's iron kingdom and Christ's iron-rod rule, though the connection is complex.
CLAY¶
Man formed from clay (JOB 33:6). Potter's sovereignty over clay (ISA 29:16; 45:9; 64:8; JER 18:6; ROM 9:21). SYMBOLICAL: DAN 2:33-41.
Relevance: The potter/clay imagery in Isaiah and Jeremiah emphasizes God's sovereignty over nations (cf. Jer 18:6 -- nations as clay in God's hand; Rom 9:21 -- potter's right over clay). Walvoord's identification of clay = democracy/populism is not supported by Nave's entry, which associates clay with divine sovereignty, not popular rule.
MILLENNIUM¶
General scriptures: ISA 65:17-25; ZEP 3:11-13; ZEC 9:9-10; 14:16-21; MAT 16:18-19; 26:29; MRK 14:25; HEB 8:11; REV 14:6; 20:1-15. Cross-references: CHURCH PROPHECIES CONCERNING; JESUS, KINGDOM OF; JESUS, SECOND COMING OF.
Relevance: FUT identifies the stone-kingdom with the millennium (Rev 20:1-6). The Nave's entry includes both OT prophetic passages (Isa 65, Zec 14) that FUT reads as describing a literal future earthly kingdom, and NT passages that could support either inaugurated or consummated readings.
CONFEDERACIES¶
Instances of confederacies: four kings vs. five kings (GEN 14:1-2); five Amorite kings (JOS 10:1-5); northern confederacy (JOS 11:1-5); Ben-hadad's coalition (1KI 20:1).
Relevance: All biblical confederacies in Nave's are HISTORICAL. There is no entry for a future ten-nation confederacy. The FUT "revived Roman Empire" concept has no direct Nave's topic support.
ALLIANCES¶
Political alliances with idolaters forbidden (EXO 23:32-33; DEU 7:2). Notable failed alliance: Zedekiah and Pharaoh (JER 37:1-8; EZK 17:15-17 -- "alliance that fails").
Relevance: EZK 17:15-17 (alliance that fails) provides a biblical parallel for the iron-clay "shall not cleave" theme. The pattern of failed alliances is biblical, but the specific "ten-nation future confederacy" is not found in Nave's.
PROPHECY¶
Inspired (ISA 28:22; 2TI 3:16; 2PE 1:21). Sure fulfillment (EZK 12:22-25; HAB 2:3; MAT 5:18; ACT 13:27,29). Extensive list of OT messianic passages quoted in NT, including PSA 118:22-23 with MAT 21:42 and ISA 28:16 with ROM 9:33; 1PE 2:6.
Relevance: The PROPHECY entry's list of OT-to-NT fulfillments confirms the stone/cornerstone chain as prophetically significant. The principle of "sure fulfillment" is relevant to both FUT (prophecy WILL be fulfilled literally) and HIST (prophecy HAS BEEN fulfilled through history).
ANCIENT OF DAYS¶
An appellate of Jehovah: DAN 7:9,13,22.
Relevance: The Ancient of Days scene (Dan 7:9-14) is the parallel to the stone striking in Dan 2. The Son of Man receiving the kingdom from the Ancient of Days (Dan 7:13-14) corresponds to the stone becoming a great mountain (Dan 2:35).
