Key observations: 1. Two actions described with the stone: - "The one having fallen ON this stone" (πεσών ἐπί) → "shall be broken" (συνθλασθήσεται, future passive) - "On whomever it [the stone] shall fall" (ἐφ' ὃν δ' ἂν πέσῃ) → "it will grind him to powder" (λικμήσει αὐτόν, future active)
- λικμήσει (likmēsei) from λικμάω (G3039) = "will winnow/grind to powder"
- Only 2 NT occurrences: Matt 21:44, Luke 20:18
- LXX usage includes Dan 2:44, Isa 17:13, Jer 31:10, Amos 9:9
-
This confirms the lexical link between Jesus's stone and Daniel 2's stone
-
The ἂν + subjunctive (πέσῃ) = indefinite conditional — "on whomever it MIGHT fall" — future and contingent, not a present action
-
συνθλάω (G4917, "shatter/crush") in passive = the one who stumbles over the stone is broken; λικμάω (G3039) in active = the stone actively grinds to powder the one it falls upon. Two distinct judgments.
