Complete Book of Daniel (Full Text)¶
Daniel 1 (Hebrew Narrative Frame)¶
1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. 1:2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. 1:3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 1:5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king. 1:6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 1:7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego. 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 1:9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. 1:10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king. 1:11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 1:12 Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink. 1:13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. 1:14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. 1:15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat. 1:16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse. 1:17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 1:18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 1:19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. 1:20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. 1:21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
Structural notes: Hebrew language. Third-person narration. Introduces biyn vocabulary (1:4 "understanding," 1:17 "understanding," 1:20 "understanding"). Mar'eh appears in 1:4, 1:13, 1:15 in its physical "appearance/countenance" sense, not visionary. Chazon appears in 1:17 ("visions"). Both vocabulary chains begin here.
Daniel 2 (Aramaic Section Begins -- First Vision Cycle)¶
2:1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. 2:2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. 2:3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. 2:4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack [Aramaic], O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. [ARAMAIC TEXT BEGINS AT 2:4b] 2:5-13 [Conflict between king and wise men; decree to destroy them] 2:14-18 [Daniel intervenes, requests time, prays with companions] 2:19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 2:20-23 [Daniel's prayer of praise] 2:24-30 [Daniel brought before king, credits God] 2:28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days [be-acharith yomayya]. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these; 2:31-35 [The great image described: gold, silver, brass, iron, iron+clay, stone] 2:36-43 [Interpretation: four kingdoms] 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 2:45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. 2:46-49 [King worships Daniel, promotes him]
Structural notes: Aramaic language from 2:4b onward. Genre: dream (another's) + interpretation. Third-person narration. Chiastic pair with Dan 7 (kingdom succession). Pattern: present anchor (Babylon=gold) -> sequential progression (four kingdoms) -> eschatological consummation (stone kingdom).
Daniel 3 (Fiery Furnace -- Chiastic Pair with Dan 6)¶
3:1-7 [Golden image set up, command to worship, music plays] 3:8-12 [Jews accused of not worshipping] 3:13-18 [Confrontation: "our God whom we serve is able to deliver us"] 3:19-23 [Cast into fiery furnace] 3:25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. 3:26-27 [Deliverance] 3:28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. 3:29-30 [Decree + promotion]
Structural notes: Aramaic language. Narrative genre (not prophetic). Theme: faithfulness under death threat from earthly king, divine deliverance. Parallel with Dan 6: both have (a) decree, (b) faithful refusal, (c) death sentence, (d) miraculous deliverance, (e) enemies punished, (f) king's confession, (g) promotion.
Daniel 4 (Nebuchadnezzar's Tree Dream -- Chiastic Pair with Dan 5)¶
4:1-3 [Nebuchadnezzar's address to all peoples -- first-person Aramaic] 4:4-9 [Dream troubles king, Daniel called] 4:10-17 [Tree vision: watcher from heaven, tree cut down] 4:17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. 4:18-27 [Daniel interprets: "It is thou, O king"] 4:28-33 [Fulfilled: Nebuchadnezzar driven from men] 4:34-35 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High... 4:36-37 [Restoration and confession: "those that walk in pride he is able to abase"]
Structural notes: Aramaic. First-person narration by Nebuchadnezzar (4:1-18, 4:34-37); third-person in between. Theme: divine humbling of a proud king. Parallel with Dan 5: both show God judging a Babylonian king's pride (Dan 4 = Nebuchadnezzar humbled and restored; Dan 5 = Belshazzar weighed and destroyed).
Daniel 5 (Writing on the Wall -- Chiastic Pair with Dan 4)¶
5:1-4 [Belshazzar's feast, temple vessels desecrated] 5:5-9 [Handwriting on wall, king terrified] 5:10-16 [Queen mother recommends Daniel] 5:17-23 [Daniel recounts Nebuchadnezzar's humbling] 5:22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; 5:24-28 [MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN interpreted] 5:29-31 [Daniel honored; that night Belshazzar slain; Darius takes kingdom]
Structural notes: Aramaic. Third-person narration. Theme: king NOT humbled (contrast with Dan 4). Dan 5:22 explicitly connects back to Dan 4's lesson. Kingdom transfer: Babylon -> Medo-Persia.
Daniel 6 (Lions' Den -- Chiastic Pair with Dan 3)¶
6:1-5 [Daniel preferred; conspiracy against him] 6:6-9 [Decree: no petition to any god for 30 days] 6:10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. 6:11-17 [Daniel caught, cast into den, stone sealed] 6:18-23 [King's distress; Daniel delivered; "he believed in his God"] 6:24-28 [Accusers destroyed; Darius's decree; Daniel prospers under Darius and Cyrus]
Structural notes: Aramaic. Third-person narration. Theme: faithfulness under death threat (cf. Dan 3). Structural parallel with Dan 3: (a) irrevocable decree, (b) faithful refusal to compromise worship, (c) death sentence executed, (d) miraculous deliverance, (e) accusers destroyed, (f) king confesses God's power, (g) protagonist prospers. Dan 6:26 echoes Dan 4:3,34 ("everlasting kingdom/dominion").
Daniel 7 (Four Beasts Vision -- Second Vision Cycle, Chiastic Pair with Dan 2)¶
7:1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. 7:2-8 [Four beasts: lion, bear, leopard, terrible fourth beast with ten horns + little horn] 7:9-10 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. 7:11-12 [Beast slain, others prolonged] 7:13-14 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. 7:15-18 [Daniel troubled, angel interprets: four beasts = four kings; saints receive kingdom] 7:19-22 [Fourth beast inquiry; little horn wars with saints until Ancient of Days comes] 7:23-27 [Interpretation: fourth kingdom, ten kings, little horn speaks against Most High, time/times/dividing of time, judgment, kingdom given to saints] 7:28 Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.
Structural notes: Aramaic language (last Aramaic chapter). Genre: dream + vision (7:1 -- both terms). First-person narration by Daniel. Angel-interpreter pattern (7:16). Chiastic pair with Dan 2: both present four kingdoms + God's eternal kingdom. Progressive intensification: Dan 2 has metals/stone; Dan 7 adds beasts, little horn, judgment scene, Son of Man. Pattern: present anchor -> sequential progression -> extended detail (little horn) -> eschatological consummation (judgment + eternal kingdom).
Daniel 8 (Ram and Goat -- Third Vision Cycle, Hebrew Resumes)¶
8:1 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision [chazon] appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. 8:2 And I saw in a vision [chazon]; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai. 8:3-4 [Ram with two horns pushing west, north, south -- became great] 8:5 And as I was considering [biyn], behold, an he goat came from the west... 8:6-8 [Goat attacks ram, great horn broken, four notable horns] 8:9-12 [Little horn: exceeding great, magnified to host of heaven, took away daily, cast down truth] 8:13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision [chazon] concerning the daily [tamid], and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? 8:14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed [nitsdaq]. 8:15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision [chazon], and sought for the meaning [binah], then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance [mar'eh] of a man. 8:16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand [haven, Hiphil imperative of biyn] the vision [mar'eh]. 8:17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand [haven], O son of man: for at the time of the end [eth-qets] shall be the vision [chazon]. 8:18-19 [Daniel in deep sleep; angel says "I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed [moed] the end [qets] shall be."] 8:20-22 [Ram = Media/Persia; goat = Grecia; four horns = four kingdoms] 8:23 And in the latter time [acharith] of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding [biyn] dark sentences, shall stand up. 8:24-25 [Power, destruction, standing against Prince of princes] 8:26 And the vision [mar'eh] of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision [chazon]; for it shall be for many days. 8:27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision [mar'eh], but none understood [mevin, Hiphil participle of biyn] it.
Structural notes: Hebrew language resumes (first Hebrew prophetic chapter). Genre: vision (chazon, 8:1-2). First-person. Gabriel introduced by name. Critical vocabulary density: chazon (8:1,2,13,15,17,26), mar'eh (8:15,16,26,27), biyn (8:5,16,17,23,27), qets (8:17,19), tamid (8:11,12,13), binah (8:15), moed (8:19). Dan 8:26 is the pivot: mar'eh (evening-morning time element) is true; chazon (broad vision) is shut up. Dan 8:27 creates the narrative gap: Daniel does NOT understand the mar'eh.
Daniel 9 (70 Weeks -- Continuation of Third Vision Cycle)¶
9:1-2 In the first year of Darius... I Daniel understood [biyn] by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. 9:3-19 [Daniel's prayer of confession and supplication] 9:20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel... 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision [chazon] at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 9:22 And he informed [biyn, Hiphil] me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding [binah]. 9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand [biyn, Qal imperative] the matter, and consider [haven, Hiphil imperative of biyn] the vision [mar'eh]. 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up [chatham] the vision [chazon] and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks... 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end [qets] thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end [qets] of the war desolations are determined. 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations [shiqquts] he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Structural notes: Hebrew. Genre: prayer + angelic visitation (NOT a new vision -- Gabriel returns from the chazon "at the beginning," 9:21). First-person. Biyn chain continues (9:2,22,23). Gabriel's mission from 8:16 resumes: "understand the mar'eh" (9:23). Dan 9:24 uses chatham (seal) with chazon. Dan 9:26-27 introduces qets and shiqquts. The 70 weeks are "cut off" (nechtak) from the broader chazon of Dan 8.
Daniel 10 (Fourth Vision Introduction -- Theophany)¶
10:1 In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood [biyn] the thing, and had understanding [binah] of the vision [mar'eh]. 10:2-3 [Three weeks of mourning and fasting] 10:4-6 [Theophany: man in linen, body like beryl, face like lightning, eyes like fire] 10:7-9 [Companions flee; Daniel alone, no strength, deep sleep] 10:10-11 [Hand touches Daniel] And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand [biyn] the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand [biyn], and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me... 10:14 Now I am come to make thee understand [biyn] what shall befall thy people in the latter days [acharith ha-yamin]: for yet the vision [chazon] is for many days. 10:15-19 [Daniel weakened, strengthened, told to be strong] 10:20-21 [Prince of Persia, prince of Grecia; Michael; scripture of truth]
Structural notes: Hebrew. Genre: theophany + angelic discourse. Third-person frame (10:1) with first-person body. Dan 10:1 is the RESOLUTION of the biyn chain: "he understood the thing, and had understanding of the mar'eh" -- finally achieving what 8:16 commanded and 8:27 failed. Biyn appears in 10:1,11,12,14. Both chazon (10:14) and mar'eh (10:1) appear. Acharith (10:14) echoes 2:28.
Daniel 11 (Fourth Vision Body -- Detailed History)¶
11:1-4 [Persia, mighty king (Greece), kingdom divided to four winds] 11:5-20 [King of south vs. king of north -- detailed political history] 11:27 And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end [qets] shall be at the time appointed [moed]. 11:28-30 [Holy covenant; ships of Chittim] 11:31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily [tamid], and they shall place the abomination [shiqquts] that maketh desolate. 11:32-34 [People who know God shall be strong; they that understand (biyn) shall instruct many] 11:33 And they that understand [maskilim] among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. 11:35 And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end [eth-qets]: because it is yet for a time appointed [moed]. 11:36-39 [King magnifies himself above every god] 11:37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers... for he shall magnify himself above all. 11:40 And at the time of the end [eth-qets] shall the king of the south push at him... 11:41-44 [Countries overthrown; tidings trouble him] 11:45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end [qets], and none shall help him.
Structural notes: Hebrew. Genre: angelic discourse (continuation of Dan 10). Vocabulary: qets (11:6,13,27,35,40,45), moed (11:27,29,35), tamid (11:31), shiqquts (11:31), biyn (11:30,33,37). The "eth qets" phrase clusters: 11:35,40 (also 8:17; 12:4,9). The tamid+shiqquts pair (11:31) links to 8:11-13 and 12:11.
Daniel 12 (Sealed/Unsealed -- Vocabulary Chains Converge)¶
12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt [deraon]. 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness [matsdiqe, Hiphil participle of tsadaq] as the stars for ever and ever. 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal [chatham] the book, even to the time of the end [eth-qets]: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. 12:5-6 [Two angels by river ask "How long?"] 12:7 ...time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. 12:8 And I heard, but I understood [biyn] not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end [acharith] of these things? 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed [chatham] till the time of the end [eth-qets]. 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand [biyn]; but the wise shall understand [biyn]. 12:11 And from the time that the daily [tamid] shall be taken away, and the abomination [shiqquts] that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12:12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. 12:13 But go thou thy way till the end [qets] be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end [qets] of the days.
Structural notes: Hebrew. All vocabulary chains converge: biyn (12:8,10), qets (12:4,6,9,13), chatham (12:4,9), tamid+shiqquts (12:11), deraon (12:2 -- only 2 OT uses), tsadaq (12:3 links to 8:14), acharith (12:8 links to 2:28 and 10:14). The sealed-to-unsealed arc: 12:4 and 12:9 seal the book "until the time of the end," contrasting with Rev 22:10 ("Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand").
