Examine the new heart / new spirit promise. What is the "stony heart" vs. "heart of flesh"? How does "I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes" relate to the new covenant? The Spirit CAUSES obedience -- what does this mean for human agency? What statutes (chuqqot) and judgments (mishpatim) does the Spirit cause obedience to? Compare Ezekiel's definition of these terms in Eze 18:5-9 (moral content: no idolatry, no adultery, honesty). Connect to Eze 11:19-20 (one heart, new spirit).

Focus 3: Hebrews' Use of Jeremiah 31 (Heb 8:6-13; 10:15-18)¶

Hebrews quotes Jeremiah's new covenant prophecy twice. In Heb 8, the argument concerns the better covenant with better promises. Analyze: "finding fault with THEM" (autous, Heb 8:8) -- the fault is with the people, not the law. In Heb 10, the context removes the sacrificial system (vv.1-9) and then quotes "my laws on their hearts" (v.16). The same passage performs both operations: ceremonial removal and moral law internalization. Analyze the phrase "he hath made the first old" (Heb 8:13) -- what exactly is made old? The covenant arrangement or the law content?

Focus 4: 2 Corinthians 3:3-18 -- Stone to Heart, Letter to Spirit¶

Paul contrasts "tables of stone" and "fleshy tables of the heart." The stone referent is the Decalogue (the only law written on stone). Analyze the letter/spirit contrast (2 Cor 3:6: "the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life"). What is "the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones" (v.7) -- is this the law itself or the old covenant administration of the law? Note: the glory of the old ministration was real (v.7), even though the glory of the new exceeds it (vv.9-11). Analyze katargoumenen (v.7, feminine participle) -- what is "done away"? Grammar indicates it modifies doxa (glory, feminine), not nomos (law, masculine).

Focus 5: OT Precedents for Law in the Heart (Psa 40:8; 37:31; 119:11; Deu 30:6,14)¶

The new covenant promise was not entirely unprecedented. Examine OT passages where the law is already described as being "in the heart": - Psa 40:8: "I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart." - Psa 37:31: "The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide." - Psa 119:11: "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." - Deu 30:6: God will circumcise the heart to love Him. - Deu 30:14: "The word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart." - Deu 6:6: "These words...shall be in thine heart." What do these OT precedents tell us about the new covenant promise? Was there a partial reality in the OT that the new covenant brings to fullness?

Focus 6: Romans 2:14-15 -- The Law Written in Gentile Hearts¶

Paul states that Gentiles "which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law...the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness." What law is "written in their hearts"? How does this relate to the new covenant promise? Is this the same phenomenon or a different one? Analyze "the work of the law" (to ergon tou nomou) and its relationship to the Decalogue.

Focus 7: The Spirit's Role in Heart-Writing (Rom 8:3-4; Gal 5:16-25; 2 Cor 3:3)¶

The Spirit is the agent of the new covenant writing. Trace the Spirit's role: - 2 Cor 3:3: "Written...with the Spirit of the living God." - Eze 36:27: "I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes." - Rom 8:3-4: "That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk...after the Spirit." - Rom 5:5: "The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost." - Gal 5:22-23: Love as the first fruit of the Spirit; "against such there is no law."
