Bible Study: 9th Commandment — Do Not Bear False Witness (Exo 20:16)¶
Question¶
What does the Bible say about the ninth commandment? What does "false witness" (ed shaqer / ed shav) mean -- Exodus uses shav (H7723, "vain/worthless") while Deuteronomy uses shaqer (H8267, "lying/deceitful"). Is this limited to courtroom testimony or does it cover all falsehood? Trace through Lev 19:11, Proverbs (6:16-19; 12:17,19,22), Jesus on truthfulness (Mat 5:33-37), Paul (Col 3:9), Satan as "father of lies" (John 8:44) vs. God who "cannot lie" (Titus 1:2). Examine Rahab (Jos 2; Heb 11:31; Jas 2:25) and the Hebrew midwives (Exo 1:15-21).

Focus Areas¶
- The shav/sheqer distinction -- Why does Exodus use sheqer (H8267) and Deuteronomy use shav (H7723)? What is the semantic range of each? Do they expand or narrow the commandment's scope? (cmd-04 already studied shav extensively)
- Courtroom vs. universal scope -- The specific language "bear witness against thy neighbour" (anah ed) suggests legal testimony, but the broader biblical usage (Lev 19:11; Pro 6:16-19; Col 3:9) extends to all lying. Trace the expansion.
- The Proverbs wisdom tradition -- Proverbs contains the densest concentration of truth/lie vocabulary. Analyze the cluster in Pro 6:16-19 (seven abominations), 12:17,19,22, 14:5,25, 19:5,9, 25:18.
- God's character as truth vs. Satan's character as liar -- Tit 1:2 / Heb 6:18 (God cannot lie) vs. Jhn 8:44 (devil is father of lies). Rev 21:8; 22:15 as eschatological consequences.
- Jesus's teaching on truthfulness -- Mat 5:33-37 (already partially analyzed in cmd-04). How does "let your yea be yea" relate to the ninth commandment?
- The Rahab/midwives cases -- Rahab (Jos 2; Heb 11:31; Jas 2:25) and Hebrew midwives (Exo 1:15-21) -- how does the Bible treat these cases of deception? Are they commended FOR lying or DESPITE lying?
- NT expansion -- Eph 4:25; Col 3:9 (put off lying); Act 5:1-10 (Ananias/Sapphira); 1Jn 2:4 (claiming to know God but not keeping commandments = liar)
- The false witness penalty -- Deu 19:15-21 (lex talionis for false witnesses); DEU 22:13-19 (false accusation of bride)
- Slander, gossip, and talebeating -- Lev 19:16; PSA 15:1,3; PRO 16:28; 26:20 as extensions of the false witness principle
- Cross-commandment connections -- How the 9th relates to the 3rd (shav link) and 8th (Lev 19:11 trilogy)
