Semantic Range: Sheqer denotes active, intentional falsehood -- lying, deception, sham. It is a deliberate misrepresentation of reality. This is the narrower, more precise term for lying.

H7723 -- shav (שָׁוְא) -- "emptiness, vanity, falsehood, worthlessness"

Transliteration: shav Pronunciation: shawv Part of Speech: masculine noun Occurrences: 54 in OT (53 BLB)

Definition: From the root sense of desolating; evil (as destructive), literally (ruin) or morally (especially guile); figuratively idolatry (as false, subjective), uselessness (as deceptive, objective; also adverbially, in vain): false(-ly), lie, lying, vain, vanity.

Used in Deuteronomy 5:20: "Neither shalt thou bear false [shav] witness"

Key Translations: - vanity (16, 29.6%) - in vain (11, 20.4%) - vain (8, 14.8%) - false (5, 9.3%) - of vanity (3, 5.6%) - lying (2, 3.7%)

Semantic Range: Shav is broader than sheqer. It encompasses emptiness, worthlessness, deception, and futility. It covers not just deliberate lies but also vain, empty, worthless speech. The same word used in the 3rd commandment (taking God's name "in vain") appears in the Deuteronomic version of the 9th.

The shav/sheqer distinction: Exodus 20:16 uses sheqer (active falsehood), while Deuteronomy 5:20 uses shav (empty/worthless testimony). Together they cover the full spectrum: testimony that is deliberately false (sheqer) AND testimony that is empty, worthless, or deceptive (shav). This is analyzed extensively in cmd-04 (3rd Commandment study).

Greek Parsing

Matthew 5:33-34,37

v.33: Πάλιν ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη τοῖς ἀρχαίοις Οὐκ ἐπιορκήσεις, ἀποδώσεις δὲ τῷ Κυρίῳ τοὺς ὅρκους σου. - ἐπιορκήσεις (epiorkeuo, G1964) -- Fut Act Ind 2S: "you shall not swear falsely/forswear" - ἀποδώσεις (apodidomi, G591) -- Fut Act Ind 2S: "you shall render/perform" - ὅρκους (horkos, G3727) -- Acc Pl M: "oaths"

v.34: ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν μὴ ὀμόσαι ὅλως - ὀμόσαι (omnuo, G3660) -- Aor Act Inf: "to swear" (infinitive) - ὅλως (holos, G3654) -- Adverb: "at all"

v.37: ἔστω δὲ ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν ναὶ ναί, οὒ οὔ· τὸ δὲ περισσὸν τούτων ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἐστιν. - ἔστω (eimi, G1510) -- Pres Act Impv 3S: "let be" (imperative) - λόγος (logos, G3056) -- Nom Sg M: "word/communication" - ναί (nai, G3483) -- Particle: "yes" - περισσόν (perissos, G4053) -- Nom Sg N: "exceeding/more than" - πονηροῦ (poneros, G4190) -- Gen Sg M: "evil/the evil one"

Note: Jesus uses the aorist infinitive "to swear" (ὀμόσαι) with μή -- a prohibition against initiating the action. The command "let your word be yes yes, no no" uses the present imperative (ἔστω), indicating ongoing practice.

Colossians 3:9

μὴ ψεύδεσθε εἰς ἀλλήλους, ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον - ψεύδεσθε (pseudomai, G5574) -- Pres Mid/Pass Impv 2P: "stop lying" (present imperative with μή suggests ceasing an action in progress) - ἀπεκδυσάμενοι (apekduomai, G554) -- Aor Mid Ptcp Nom Pl M: "having put off" (aorist participle = prior completed action)

Note: The aorist participle "having put off" grounds the prohibition -- stop lying BECAUSE you have already put off the old man. The putting off is completed; the truth-telling must now be the ongoing practice.

John 8:44

- διαβόλου (diabolos, G1228) -- Gen Sg M: "devil/slanderer" (literally "one who throws across" = accuser) - ἀνθρωποκτόνος (anthropoktonos, G443) -- Nom Sg M: "murderer of men" - ἀληθείᾳ (aletheia, G225) -- Dat Sg F: "truth" (locative dative: "in the truth") - ἔστηκεν (steko, G4739) -- Impf Act Ind 3S: "he stood/has stood" (did not stand in the truth) - ψεῦδος (pseudos, G5579) -- Acc Sg N: "the lie/falsehood" - ψεύστης (pseustes, G5583) -- Nom Sg M: "liar" - πατήρ αὐτοῦ -- "the father of it" (i.e., father of the lie/lying)

Note: Jesus connects murder and lying as twin characteristics of the devil. The devil is both "murderer from the beginning" and "father of lies." The definite article τό before ψεῦδος ("THE lie") may suggest lying as a category, not just a single lie. The phrase "ek ton idion lalei" ("from his own he speaks") shows lying originates from within the devil's own nature -- it is not learned but constitutive.
