Bible Study: The Third Commandment — Taking God's Name in Vain

Question

What does "take the name of the LORD thy God in vain" mean? What does "vain" (shav, H7723) mean in Hebrew? This is the only commandment with an attached consequence ("the LORD will not hold him guiltless"). How does the Bible apply this beyond profanity -- false oaths (Lev 19:12), misrepresenting God (Deut 18:20-22), profaning God's name through conduct (Isa 52:5; Rom 2:24)? What does Jesus teach about oaths (Mat 5:33-37)? What does "hallowed be thy name" (Mat 6:9) mean as the positive counterpart?

Key findings from cmd-01 (Decalogue study): - The Decalogue was spoken directly by God (Exo 20:1; Deu 5:4,22), written by God's finger (Exo 31:18), placed inside the ark (Exo 25:16; 40:20) - "He added no more" (Deu 5:22) marks it as complete - Its attributes mirror God's character: holy, just, good, spiritual, perfect (Rom 7:12,14; Psa 19:7-9) - New covenant transfers location (stone to heart) not content (Jer 31:33; Heb 8:10)

Key findings from cmd-02 (First Commandment): - "Before me" (al panay) means "in my presence" -- universal and absolute - God's name represents His identity and character - The commandments are grounded in God's redemptive act (Exo 20:2)

Focus Areas

(Derived from tool discoveries -- not training knowledge)

  1. Hebrew word study of Exo 20:7 -- Three key words: nasa (H5375, "take/bear/carry"), shem (H8034, "name"), shav (H7723, "vain/false/empty"). The word shav appears in BOTH the 3rd commandment (Exo 20:7) and the 9th commandment (Exo 20:16, "false witness") -- investigate this overlap. The word nasa means "to bear/carry" rather than merely "to speak" -- what are the implications?

  2. The unique consequence clause -- "the LORD will not hold him guiltless" uses naqah (H5352), which means "acquit, leave unpunished." This is the only commandment with an explicit penalty clause built in. Compare with Exo 34:7; Num 14:18; Nah 1:3 where the same phrase appears in God's self-description.

  3. Scope of "profaning God's name" (from Nave's BLASPHEMY and GOD NAME OF entries) -- The tool-discovered verses show profaning covers:

  4. False oaths: LEV 19:12; JER 5:2,7; 7:8,9
  5. Child sacrifice to Molech: LEV 18:21; 20:3
  6. Priestly defilement: LEV 21:6; 22:2,32
  7. Conduct causing others to blaspheme: ISA 52:5; ROM 2:24; 1TI 6:1; TIT 2:5
  8. False prophecy: DEU 18:20-22; EZK 13:6-9 (shav used for false visions!)
  9. Cursing/reviling: LEV 24:10-16; 2KI 19:22

  10. Jesus on oaths (from OATH entry) -- MAT 5:33-37; 23:18-22. The OATH entry also lists God Himself swearing oaths (GEN 22:16; HEB 6:13-17), creating a contrast to explore.

  11. "Hallowed be thy name" (Mat 6:9) as the positive counterpart -- hagiazo (G37) means "to make holy, sanctify." How does this relate to the prohibition in the 3rd commandment? The tool-discovered connection between profaning (chalal, H2490) and sanctifying (qadash, H6942 / hagiazo, G37) creates a direct positive-negative pair.

  12. Shav (H7723) across Scripture -- 53 occurrences. Tool shows it used for: false witness (Exo 20:16), false visions (Eze 12:24; 13:6-9), vain worship (Isa 1:13), vanity/idolatry (Jer 18:15; Jonah 2:9), false divination (Zec 10:2). The semantic range is broader than mere profanity.

  13. The blasphemy theme through Revelation -- Tool-discovered verses show REV 13:1,5,6; 16:9,11,21; 17:3 as eschatological blasphemy. Also DAN 7:25; 11:36,37 and 2TH 2:3,4 (man of sin).

  14. Proverbs 30:7-9 -- Discovered in both BLASPHEMY and FALSEHOOD entries. Agur prays: "Remove far from me vanity [shav] and lies... lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain." Direct connection to the 3rd commandment.
